Seth Grahame-Smith’s remake of Pride and Prejudice; Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies follows the same plot outline as Jane Austen’s original work. Both novels center around the idea of Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy falling in love despite the occurring events in the both novels.

Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies does not go into as much depth as Austen’s original. In Smith’s remake the zombies seem to take up the focus in some of the scenes that are important in the plot of the story. The ball scene in the very beginning of the book is a primary example. Instead of Elizabeth’s feelings being disclosed to the reader, the focus seemed primarily on the attack of the zombies, and the obligation the sisters had to protect the guests at the ball.

The relationship the sisters have with their father is also different in the remake than in Pride and Prejudice. In the original, the girls father doesn’t appear to have much to do with his daughters, or have any role in their lives whatsoever. But in the remake, their father is the one who has taught them martial arts to defend themselves and others against the zombies. He seems to be more involved in the remake than in the original. The girls mother however still appears to have the same goal she did in the original; to marry all of her daughters off to wealthy men.

In the original novel, a large majority of the book focuses on the relationship between Jane and Mr. Bingley, but in the remake, less of the plot is spent on Elizabeth’s relationship with Mr. Bingley and more on her own relationship with Mr. Darcy. I feel that Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies kept my attention more on the story than the original. The remake also seemed to follow a cause and effect scheme. There wasn’t as much jumping around in the remake.

Something I noticed throughout the remake, was that Mr. Darcy didn’t appear “as” hostile towards Elizabeth than he did in the original. As the book continued I also noticed that Mr. Darcy appeared more eager than he did in the original. I found the original to be more entertaining because of the dramatic change in feelings and relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.
