What does Jesus think about humility?
Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are those who recognize they are spiritually helpless. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.”
The first 4 of the beatitudes describe our relationship with God. The last four focus on our relationship with others.
Humility is the first step a person must make in BECOMING a Christian.
You can’t but Jesus can.
Once we become disciples of Christ it is a recurring step that must be made. You can’t, but Jesus can.
Humility is like a pair of bookends.
Luke 14:8-11 “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Proverbs 29:23 “A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.”
Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction; a haughty spirit before a fall.”
1 Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves, therefore, before God’s mighty hand, that He may life you up in due time.”
Jesus thinks humility really does bring overflowing joy!
Jesus is in the Happiness Business!
When you humble yourself you make all kinds of joyful things possible.
When we are humble Christ is able to change us.
When we are humble Christ is able to lead us.
When we are humble Christ can use us to His glory.
When we are humble Christ is precious to us.
There must be an emptying before there can be a filling.
The opposite of humility is pride.
Pride is about my glory. Humility is about God’s glory.
Pride is about me. Humility is about Jesus.
Pride makes the world revolve around me. Humility makes the world revolve around Jesus.
Pride makes me serve myself. Humility makes me serve God and others.
Pride makes me focus only on myself. Humility turns my attention toward God’s glory and others.
The Effects of Pride
God resists the proud.
1 Peter 5:5-6 “Young people, in a similar way, place yourselves under the authority of spiritual leaders. Furthermore, all of you must
serve each other with humility, because God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble. Be humbled by God's power so
that when the right time comes he will honor you.” what they were like.”
All kinds of sin come from pride.
Pride destroys relationships with God and others.
Pride numbs the senses.
How do we humble ourselves?
1. Focus on Him until you see Him in all His glory.
2. Admit to God that you are guilty of enthroning yourself.
3. Be transformed by prayer and God’s Word.
4. Pray for the power to be a doer of His Word and then step out to obey it.
This type of person will be filled with joy and ALSO fill others with joy and ALSO fill Jesus’ heart with joy!
I can’t but He can!
