History During WWI Army Captain Robert L. Queissner created the Blue Star Banner in 1917, in honor of his two sons while serving.
Looks The Blue Star Banner is white with a red border. Up to five stars can be included symbolizing how many family members are serving. If a member of the family is killed while working in the army, a gold star is put on top of the blue one creating a border.
