The Blue Star Banner By Brook and Breann The Blue Star Banner is an American tradition. It describes that a family member is serving in the war.Other names for this very special banner that is displayed for our people in their service include “Service Flag” and “Son in Service Flag”.

History During WWI Army Captain Robert L. Queissner created the Blue Star Banner in 1917, in honor of his two sons while serving.

Looks The Blue Star Banner is white with a red border. Up to five stars can be included symbolizing how many family members are serving. If a member of the family is killed while working in the army, a gold star is put on top of the blue one creating a border.

American Legion The American Legion is an important part of the Blue Star Banner. They give banners to many families across the nation.

Representation of Colors The blue stars represent hope, pride, and bravery. The gold star represents sacrifice, liberty, and freedom.

The Blue Star Banner is very important to families that have someone serving in their household. Any American who takes pride in their freedom, appreciates the flag as well. If you see one in a window, someone is in the military, serving our country.
