Harassment or Teasing? Know the difference

“It’s Just A Joke” Have you seen or heard students bully or harass other students? (Discuss) Is it funny to the one being harassed? (Discuss) How does being harassed make you feel? (Discuss) Why do the students try to disguise teasing as a joke? (Discuss) Is it ever a joke to tease others? Why or Why not? (Discuss)

Harassment Students need to distinguish between harmless teasing and behavior that has crossed the line. Students need to recognize that cloaking behavior under the guise of fun and humor does not change the fact that it’s still harassment.

Victims have rights Students should recognize intentional and malicious teasing. Victims and bystanders should stand up to the perpetrator. Tell a teacher, councilor, police officer, or the principal.
