1980 Games – Lake Placid – The USA Ice Hockey Team - Inspiration 1988 Games – Calgary – The Jamaican Bob Sleigh Team – ‘Cool Runnings’- Equality & Respect 1996 Games – Lillehammer – Dan Jansen – Courage & Determination

During the Cold War – the USA & USSR were bitter rivals The team form the USSR were unbeaten & the best in the world – they had won Gold at every Games since 1964 The US team was made up of mainly college players led by coach Herb Brooks Critics thought that this team was a ‘joke' and they would be an embarrassment Brooks pushed them to their limits in training and turned them into an effective team

Miracle The New York Times wrote before the game ‘Unless the ice melts or the US or another team perform a miracle the USSR will easily win gold for the 6 th time in the last 7 major tournaments

Speed skater Jansen tried to win medals at 3 previous Games In 1984 at Sarajevo he fell in the final In 1988 at Calgary he was told minutes before he went on the ice that his sister had just died as a result of Leukaemia – he fell again 1992 in Albertville he was again the favourite and fell in both his finals 1996 in Lillehammer he fell again in the 500m final Only one more race before retirement – the 1000m, his last chance

Courage, Determination, Inspiration The 1000m was his last race – he won the gold & broke the world record !! He dedicated his medal to his sister.

Respect 1988 Calgary Games the Jamaicans entered a bobsleigh team even though they had no snow on which to train
