Uniqueness Awareness Week Student Council

Uniqueness Awareness Week Monday - Wear your “FAVORITE COLOR” to represent the Rainbow of diversity and uniqueness. -Tuesday - Wear “PURPLE” to support Relay for Life -Wednesday - Wear your favorite “SPORTS UNIFORM OR MUSIC SHIRT” to represent your sportsmanship. -Thursday - Wear Black to “BLACK OUT BULLYING” -Friday - Wear crazy socks to support “SOCKING OUT” cruelty and discrimination.

What does it mean to be unique? -We may forget this and that could lead us to think that everyone will think/act/be the same as us, but that is not true and diversity is not a bad thing. -Unique: There is nobody exactly like you, you are your own person, incomparable to others. Stand out in your own way! -I’m unique because: I play baseball, I’m a trumpet player, I’m really silly, I love cooking.

Why is uniqueness important? - It shows us that not everyone is exactly alike. -Everyone has different interests/features that make us who we are. -This lets us learn from each other and see things differently.

Understanding and Respecting -Understanding Differences -This is the ability to acknowledge and allow other opinions and ways of life even though they are not like yours -Having an open mind to new things. -Acceptance: No matter what, I respect you and I will treat you kindly

Bullying -Opposite of acceptance -Taking what make’s others unique and using it to put them down (physically or mentally) -Refusing to have an open mind -Thinking that their opinion/way of life is better and that people who are different are wrong

Different Kinds of Bullying Physical -Actually hurting the other person Mental -Use words to make others feel worthless, although it doesn’t seem like it Cyber -Sending hateful messages about someone online Accidental -Jokes/insults are taken the wrong way

It was just a joke -You never know how people will react to your words and cruelty is not a joke -Why is it not OK to say these things? -How can I stop these negative words?

Bullying can lead to: -Feeling like you aren’t good enough -Feeling like everyone is against you -Wanting to hide what makes you different -Feeling isolated and alone -Feeling like you will never belong

And... These thoughts can affect a person for their whole life.

Uniqueness Awareness Week Monday & Tuesday - Guest speakers in PE classes to talk about stereotypes and the importance of sportsmanship. -Tuesday – High School STAT club presents on helping others in all Special subjects and Student Council presents during indoor recess on Relay for Life and how we can help those in need. -Wednesday - Shaun Derik speaks to the school about leadership, public responsibility, and imagination. -Thursday - Sign the Pledge for Equality and agree that you will help to end bullying and discrimination. -Friday - Wear crazy socks to support “SOCKING OUT” cruelty and attend the Dodgeball Tournament directly following school.
