Purpose of 5th Symposium 1. GWA and Capacity Building International network 2200 members, in 128 countries 30 % organisations, 45% men, 55% women Large part of our work is capacity building for gender mainstreaming in IWRM and all water sectors, together with partner organisations.

Purpose of 5th Symposium 2. Chain of Water Management for overall development and welfare of all people - Water users - Water technicians and advisors - Institutions, organisations - Policy and decision makers

Purpose of 5th Symposium 3. Gender, Diversity and Vulnerability Water users: - Women – men - Age: children: girls and boys, elderly - Ethnicity, minorities - Class: poor and better-off - Rural - urban - Different abilities: women and men All over: women are responsible for water in households

Examples of Vulnerable groups Vulnerable people have a big problem looking after themselves; - Poor women (not all women are vulnerable), Women-heads of households; - Widows, Elderly in general, especially those who are poor; - Children-headed households, and combinations of these: - Grandmothers with small grandchildren of whom the parents died; - People with physical or mental disabilities (f/m); Albinos; - Fisher men and women; - Low caste; - Ethnic minorities, indigenous people (f/m); - People sexually different from the mainstream; - Refugee women, children and men.

Purpose of 5th Symposium 5. How to include vulnerability in Capacity Development -Inquiries are important part of Capacity Building. -Trainees are supported to write Gender Mainstreaming Action Plans, in which they ask the needs and interests of water users, including vulnerable groups. -Trainees learn to tap the knowledge of women water managers at household level. -Trainees learn to understand that 100% of the people (f/m) need water every day of the year.
