Digital Pedagogy Praxis Creating Narratives Using Multi-literacies Digital Pedagogy Praxis

Multi-Literacy Theory Terminology New Literacy(ies) Multimodal processes and products Digital pedagogies/Critical pedagogies Multi-literacy(ies) New Media Writing New London Group (socio-cultural) Tools, Tools, Tools and Their Use All of these take us from a print-text paradigm to the diverse genres in which literacy is practiced in the 21st Century

Socio-Cultural Lens “Reading and writing only make sense when studied in the context of social and cultural practices of which we are but a a part” (Gee, 2000) Because literacies make meaning from social and cultural constructs, they evolve like them as well.

Multi-literacy/modal Praxis English 1101 20 Student-Scholars “Essay” Opportunity

Process of “Day in the Life” Handout  Key Points Choose a digital or physical identity (socio-cultural) Tweet, Tweet, Tweet (Rhetorically!) Rhetorically Organize in Storify Create an animated representation of the topic

“Day in the Life” Comps. “I tweeted as a Minecraft Player as if they were in the world as a new spawn (no supplies and a new world in which they build). I ordered them chronologically since Minecraft is very much a game where you take one step at a time, and getting ahead of yourself only leads to death.” Storify Page GoAnimate Video “I really like this project. It was kind of fun trying to use limited resources to portray what a day in the life of a Minecraft player would be like. I liked that we had the freedom to pick any identity we wanted and the only gripe I have is that GoAnimate is very limited on things like sound effects.” Quntin B.

“Day in the Life” Comps A Day in the Life of a Space Marine A Day in the Life of Jim Raynor It was quite different taking on the persona of a completely different character.  I had to think and react the same way that the character was, and I quite enjoyed it! I thought that the storytelling was interesting, as you could have made it several different ways on Storify.  I chose to do my Tweets in chronological order, as it made the most sense for my character, Jim Raynor.  However, in the GoAnimate movie, I chose to have the same story portrayed, but from the side that Jim Raynor was fighting against, trying to make it seem as though neither side is truly in the right. FanKev is a Bluebird The one thing that troubled me the most in making this video was the length in time given (there was only 30 seconds); I keep having to cut off some things to make the video not surpass the limit. Because of all the cutting, the video kind of looks fast past in time. Due to that, the day to night sequence isn’t as detailed as I’d like it to be. Another thing that was kind of a pain was the limited characters/scenes from me to choose from. ON the other hand, GoAnimate gives me a nice feeling on animating objects.

Change is Cool. Digital/Critical pedagogy provides opportunities for us to meet students in engaging (digital) spaces on their own terms. Levels out power dynamics. “Flips” the process. Multimodal text development engenders creativity and rhetorical growth. An engaged student-scholar is a successful student-scholar.

Up for a Challenge? Cheryl Ball: Learning to communicate effectively in multiple spaces requires sustained practice in multiple composition texts. Kuhn Interviews Students about Multi-Modalities
