Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 2 Some information about Ljubljana Airport 2013 Aircraft operations (movements) Passengers Cargo ton Number of checks for the presence of birds3751 Use of pyrotechnic995 Number of birdstrikes58

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 3 Presence of birds at LJLJ (2013) PERCENTAGE BIRD SPECIES 57,40% STARLING 18,13%CROWS 7,90% COMMON BUZZARD 6,17% HOODED CROW 2,66% COMMON KESTREL 2,45% SWALLOW

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 4 BIRD STRIKES ( Depending on the type of bird )

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 5 Why collect data on bird presence and bird strikes? In safety what isn't documented doesn't exist! Proof Monitoring the effectiveness of the measures (passive and active) We monitor the level of risk – risk assessment

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 6 Why collect data on bird presence and bird strikes? We fulfill legal requirements : National (SLO) regulation : Regulation on occurrence reporting in civil aviation EU regulation: COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 965/2012– Air operations COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 139/2014 – (EASA ED DECISION 2014/012/R in ED DECISION 2014/013/R) – Aerodromes Requirements of ICAO Annex 14 - Reporting for IBIS base

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 7 How did we collect data before deployment of GALIOT WLM?

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 8 Filling out a paper form – by approx. 50 firefighters Consistency of data (incorrect location, incorrect naming of species of birds, number of birds recorded with words) Difficulties in ensuring the readability of reports Time consuming

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 9 PAPER REPORT – Aerodrom Ljubljana

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 10 PAPER REPORT – Aerodrom Ljubljana

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 11 Digitization and analysis of data Manual digitalization of data Manual analysis of data

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 12 Preparation of documentation

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 13 The transition to a software solution Review of situation on the market (comparison Scarecrow Ultima and Galiot - WLM) We opted for a comprehensive solution Galiot (all the different applications in one place) Testing - demo WLM application for all to try Translation to Slovene Implementation (buying a laptop, ensuring mobile internet connection – 3G, coordination with Galiot, staff training)

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 14 ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 15 GALIOT - WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT MODULE Using the online form (we eliminated many of the problems - readability and consistency of data, etc.) The data is now analyzed and digitalized automatically Automatic bird strike risk assessment – it is generated at any given time

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 16 HEURISTIC MODEL – BIRD RISK ASSESSMENT The methodology of risk analysis in GALIOT is in line with the methodology of dr. John Allan (Head of Wildlife Management Programme FERA - UK) The methodology is described in the article: Allan, John A Heuristic Risk Assessment Technique for Birdstrike Managment at Airports

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 17 The average number of bird strikes (5 years) % bird strikes with damage = x mass of birds HEURISTIC MODEL – BIRD RISK ASSESSMENT Vir:

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 18 BIRD STRIKE RISK ASSESSMENT FOR LJLJ IN 2013 Vir: Aerodrom Ljubljana, d.d.

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 19 ACTUAL RISK ASSESSMENT FOR LJLJ Vir: Galiot.

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 20 SERIOUS MULTIPLE STRIKE WHAT IS A SERIOUS MULTIPLE BIRDSTRIKE? A serious multiple strike is defined as an incident in which more than 2 birds were struck and more than 10 seen OR when more than 10 birds were struck.

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 21 SERIOUS MULTIPLE BIRDSTRIKE What does this adjustment allows us? Collisions between aircraft and flocks of birds have greater weight in our analysis. BIRD SPECIES (MASS BIRDS) NUMBER OF SMB IN LAST 5 YEARS SERIOUS MULTIPLE BIRSTRIKE VERY HIGH OR HIGH SEVERITY OF THE IMPACT 1LEVEL 3 (RED) MODERATE, LOW OR VERY LOW SEVERITY OF THE IMPACT 2 OR MORELEVEL 3 (RED)

Wildlife management with Galiot WLM 22 RISK IN THE AVIATION SYSTEM  How to manage risk? Managing of risk is associated three components (exposure, likelihood and severity). EXPOSURE (habitat management at the airport) PROBABILITY (detection and bird harassment) SEVERITY (aircraft engines that can adsorb energy from a bird strike, stronger windshields, training pilots in case of bird strikes, etc.)  When we successfully manage all three components, only then we can say that our system is optimized.
