Geometry Thematic Unit 4 th grade Syndi Rugel CEDC 705 Dr. John Niman Spring 2011

NYS Standards 4.G.2Identify points and line segments when drawing a plane figure 4.G.6Draw and identify intersecting, perpendicular, and parallel lines 4.G.7Identify points and rays when drawing angles 4.G.8Classify angles as acute, obtuse, right, and straight

Rationale This unit is designed for 4 th grade students to practice with polygons and space figures. We will recognize that geometry is all around us and students will become familiar with geometric shapes that we encounter in our daily lives. This unit’s duration will be about 1.5 weeks

Goals for this unit Students will be able to define symmetry Students will be able to do independent reading and investigation in relation to geometry Students will be able to make connections to the real world through geometric shapes Students will be able to extend their skills of arithmetic and relate them to geometric shapes. Students will learn about symmetry and geometric shapes through art Create an album consisting of photos taken by the students at the end of the unit

Geometry strand Students will: use visualization and spatial reasoning to analyze characteristics and properties of geometric shapes; Identify and justify geometric relationships, formally and informally; Apply transformations and symmetry to analyze problem solving situations; Apply coordinate geometry to analyze problem solving situations.

Introductory activity- Geometry Dictionary *Have students fold a piece of loose-leaf paper vertically and write down “Word” on the left side and “Definition” on the right. As we move throughout the unit, the students will update their dictionary with all the new vocabulary they learn. This will be used as a study guide for quizzes and tests throughout the unit. dictionary-S.html#Symmetry

Lesson 1- Points, Line segments, Lines and Rays Introduce vocabulary Point: refers to a specific location on a geometric figure (a dot) Line segment: a line that has a beginning point and an end point Line: no beginning point or end point, it continues indefinitely in both directions Ray: has a beginning point but no end point

lines points

Line segment and rays

Lesson 2- Angles Introduce vocabulary Angle: is a geometric figure made up of 2 rays that have the same beginning point Vertex: is the common endpoint of two or more rays or line segments Arms: are the two straight sides that unite at the vertex * Angles are measured in degrees. The number of degrees tell you how wide open the angle is. Degrees are marked by a ° symbol. The space inside an angle of less than 180 degrees.

Lesson 2-Angles Types of angles and their measurements Right angle: an angle whose measure is exactly 90 degrees Acute angle: an angle whose measures is between 0 and 90 degrees Obtuse angle: an angle whose measure is greater than 90 but less than 180 degree

Lesson2- Angles *Have students practice drawing the different types of angles. I will draw angles of different sizes and inquire about which angles are smaller and which are bigger. *Highlight the importance of labeling the points on the angle and the vertex. Remind students that the vertex should always be the point where the 2 arms meet (middle)

Labeling an angle..

Angles….

Connections to art and real life

Lesson 3- Congruent figures Congruent figures are figures that are the same size and the same shape These two figures are congruent: These two figures aren’t congruent:

Practice congruence

Lesson 3- Congruent figures Activity: find the figures on the top row that are congruent to the bottom row.

Lesson 4- Symmetry *Symmetry is the identical reflection of 2 sides. A figure has a line of symmetry if it can be folded so that its two parts match precisely. A figure that has a line of symmetry is called a symmetric figure. Some symmetric figures have only one line of symmetry, others have more *Explain vertical symmetry vs. horizontal symmetry

Symmetry all around us..

Symmetry in architecture

Lesson 5- Parallel, perpendicular and lines *Parallel lines are lines that never meet because the distance between them is always the same. They can be horizontal or vertical but will never meet. *Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect to form a right angle (90 degrees) *Intersecting lines are 2 or more lines that cross and meet at one point

Parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines..

Homework on parallel, intersecting and perpendicular, lines… Students will go home and make note of items in their homes that are parallel, intersecting or perpendicular to one another. For example picture frames on the walls, windows, doors, hands on the clock and mirrors. Explain why they are parallel, intersecting or why they are perpendicular and draw a picture of it.

Geometry and literature

Assessment and adaptation for Bilingual students 1.Lines quiz 2.Hidden angles quiz 3.Symmetry quiz Adaptation- students will keep picture dictionary for all the vocabulary learned in this unit in their language and will refer to is as often as needed

Field trip for the unit We will take a walk in the neighborhood and I will divide the students into 4 groups. Each group will get 2 disposable cameras. Students will be instructed to take photos of real world examples of geometry. Examples are a tall building, railroad tracks or a traffic light. The photos will be later developed to create 4 photo albums with all the geometric shapes. The geometry dictionary created throughout the unit will be part of the album and is to be displayed on bulletin boards.
