Startup Training – TPS3 15

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 2 Topics Covered  Visual Inspections  Verify environmental requirements are met  TPS3 15 Diagnostic Operation  Test Procedures  Fill out Inspection Sheet

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 3 Visual Inspections  Neutral and ground bond needs to be visually inspected.  If bond is loose, missing, or old, tighten, install, or replace bond. Poor neutral to ground bonds account for 99.9% of all surge protection failures.  Surge protection failure due to poor neutral to ground bond integrity will NOT be warranted!  Refer to page two of the installation manual. Ground bond broken off

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 4 Verify Environmental Requirements  This surge protector is designed to operate indoors in an ambient temperature range of -40  C (-40  F) to +60  C (+140  F) with a relative humidity of 0% to 95%(non- condensing).  Verify installed environment meets this requirement.  Refer to page three of installation manual.  Refer to Red Warning Tag that is attached to disconnect

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 5 Startup  Before energizing. Surge protection must remain off until high-potential insulation testing is finished. Refer to page 1 of manual  Once all installation procedures are followed, surge protector can now be energized.  All Siemens TPS surge protectors are designed to be virtually maintenance free. Light indicators show protection status. The following slides show different light conditions and what they mean.

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 6 Normal Status Normal 100% function suppressor will have three green lights. The service light will not illuminate nor will the audible alarm sound.

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 7 Testing Status If the unit is in “Normal Mode – All green lights”, pressing the “Test” button will cause the red service light to illuminate, the audible alarm to sound, and the dry contacts will change state. Also, the green lights remain illuminated during the test. Once the “Test” button is released, the service light stops illuminating, audible alarm will stop sounding, and the dry contacts will reset. The green phase lights stay illuminated.

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 8 Fault Condition If a fault condition occurs, the audible alarm will sound, the Red Service LED will illuminate and the LED representing the affected phase/s will extinguish, indicating that the unit needs service. Contact a qualified electrician or technician for evaluation.

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 9 Silence Audible Alarm If an inoperative condition were to occur, the built-in audible alarm will sound and the red Service LED will illuminate. This indicates that the unit needs evaluation by a qualified electrician or technician. Until a qualified person evaluates the unit, press Alarm Silence to silence the alarm. (The LED above Alarm Silence illuminates when the alarm is deactivated. Normal operation occurs with the Alarm Silence LED extinguished.) The red Service LED will remain illuminated even though the Audible Alarm has been silenced.

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 10 Abnormal N-G Voltage Indicators This SPD include N-G voltage indicators. If the SPD detects excessive N-G voltage, the Red Service LED will blink and the Audible Alarm will cycle. This condition requires immediate attention as the SPD will fail. Immediately TURN OFF the SPD, and contact electrician to inspect system grounding.

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 11 What Causes Abnormal N-G Voltage? Incorrectly bonded distribution systems damage SPDs. If the XO or N-G bonding jumper is not installed, the electrical system has no reference to ground. It becomes an ungrounded system. Please see previous section regarding SPDs on ungrounded systems. Such systems are known to eventually produce abnormally high L-G voltages. SPDs will attempt to chase this system-level overvoltage abnormality until the SPD fails. This effect is accelerated on Wye systems where SPDs are designed for grounded systems. (SPDs for ungrounded systems generally have higher MCOV to allow for L-G voltage fluctuations.) Failures of this nature are not defects in the SPDs workmanship or material. This is an installation error and is not covered by warranty. A differential voltage circuit monitors neutral to ground voltage. When N-G voltage becomes excessive, an amplifier energizes a resistor. Eventually, that resistor will overheat and cause thermally sensitive shrink wrap to shrink around the resistor. This does not occur on transient or instantaneous N-G overvoltages. When the SPD is deenergized, the shrink wrap covered resistor can be accessed by qualified personnel under the display plate cover.

Siemens TPS3 Startup Training 12 Return To Normal Status Once damaged modules are replaced, the phase light or lights will return to their green state, and the service light will stop illuminating. Also, the audible alarm will stop sounding. If the audible alarm silence switch was depressed to turn off the alarm, the silence alarm light will remain on. You need to depress the silence switch again to activate the audible alarm and turn of the silence alarm light.
