Unit 1: Reviewing Parts of Speech and How Diction Creates Meaning How can grammar control a reader’s understanding and create a distinguished style?

Learning Targets I can define and identify parts of speech in a text. I can collaborate effectively with my peers by staying focused on a task and contributing my own ideas. As a group we can create new ideas, present information and discuss our opinions. I can present my understanding of a topic to peers in an audible, organized, coherent manner. I can analyze impact of specific diction and its impact on a text’s meaning, style, or tone.

Diction The choice and use of words within a piece of writing

Parts of Speech Noun: a word used to identify people, places, things, or ideas

Parts of Speech Pronoun: a word that replaces a noun. Since it REPLACES a noun, a noun must be used FIRST.

Parts of Speech Adjective: a word that describes a noun; tells how many, what kind and which one

Parts of Speech Verb: a word that describes an action, state of being, or helps create tense

Parts of Speech Adverb: a word that describes a verb or adjective; tells when, where, how, why; normally ends in -ly

Parts of Speech Preposition: a word (usually appearing before a noun) that shows position, location, or relationships between words

Parts of Speech Conjunction: a word that links ideas together (FANBOYS)

Learning Targets I can define and identify parts of speech in a text. I can collaborate effectively with my peers by staying focused on a task and contributing my own ideas. As a group we can create new ideas, present information and discuss our opinions. I can present my understanding of a topic to peers in an audible, organized, coherent manner. I can analyze impact of specific diction and its impact on a text’s meaning, style, or tone.
