General Dentistry - Definition General Dentistry is defined as the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment (non- surgical, surgical or related procedures) of diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body; provided by a dentist, within the scope of his/her education, training and experience, in accordance with the ethics of the profession and applicable law.

Partnership between generalist and specialist The division of Knowledge into separate categories in modern Dentistry has led to the emergence of various specialties. The need of such division is partly due to treatment needs and partly due to the complexity and time required to train a dentist to be clinically competent enough to handle most, if not all, clinical situations. While the ultimate goal of clinical dentistry is to solve patient dental problems, we have to understand the inherent nature of many dental problems which always require multidisciplinary approaches to tackle. It is the duty of a general dentist to coordinate various treatment approaches as to serve the patient better. GD is the hub in quality dental care Quality Hub

Summary

MGD Summary The destination of the QF is MGD and is obtainable by either Full examination or credit transfer The MGD is set at 3 years post graduation and is a non-specialist and sub fellowship level training. Syllabubs and curriculum of the examination and training program are so designed as to develop Clinical and Practice related competencies and their standards. Candidates are not unprepared to the examination and there are guided learning by Structured taught clinical and practice modules

MGD Summary ( Cont’d) Credit transfer is to recognize the effort of prior learning Credit Transfer of any postgraduate qualification is based on the principles of equivalence to the MGD examination context and relevance to general dentistry. It also requires a good record of continuous professional development and maturity in time. A Register of Transferable Credit is established to ensure the GP can select the accredited courses/ qualifications which conform to the format and context of the local Membership in General Dentistry examination. Therefore QF is not limited to examination only. It allows diversity in training and ensure flexibility in time and more choices on training providers. It is an academic home for dentists!
