Massachusetts Department of Public Health December 2014 HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE CENTER: OVERVIEW OF THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS DATA SERIES

 The Data Series provides information about workforce demographics e.g. employment characteristics, education, future plans, of seven (to date) health professional disciplines licensed to practice in Massachusetts  Dentists  Dental hygienists  Pharmacists  Physicians  Physician assistants  Registered nurses – includes advanced practice  Licensed practical nurses. MASSACHUSETTS HEALTH PROFESSIONS DATA SERIES

 Establishes an effective, efficient and sustainable system for the ongoing collection and analysis of relevant and timely workforce data in conjunction with license renewal to:  Facilitate coordination  Identify and monitor trends  Inform policy-and-decision-makers  Assessments  Uses a core or minimum data set of questions across disciplines in order to better inform health workforce assessment, trends and resource allocation HEALTH PROFESSIONS DATA SERIES

 GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF NURSING POSITIONS  Of the 67,798 RNs and APRNs that report currently working in Massachusetts, 17,937 (33.8%) reported that their primary place of employment was in the Boston Region FROM 2012 REGISTERED NURSE REPORT

 The Initiative, and subsequent data analysis and reports, responds to the need for quality and timely data on workforce demographics and employment characteristics of the Commonwealth’s healthcare workforce.
