SMP Overview SMP is a four-and-a-half week program for local rising juniors and seniors in high school who have demonstrated academic excellence and an interest in pursuing a graduate education Several graduate programs at the University of Pennsylvania participate, and select 10 students from the list of applicants
SMP Overview The participating graduate programs: Medicine Nursing Engineering Dentistry Law Each Wednesday, all 5 programs would meet and the students would receive lectures and assistance in college application process from university administrators
The Dental Program The Penn Dental Medicine program is overseen by the Director of Diversity, Dr. Beverly Crawford, and coordinated by two rising 2 nd year students The emphasis of the program is to give students a condensed experience of the first year of dental school Didactic lectures Laboratory Exercises Clinical experiences (observational)

Didactic Lectures Students received 1-hour lectures from faculty members on a variety of subjects Periodontics Orthodontics Prosthodontics Pharmacology Lectures were also given by the coordinating dental students on osteology and anatomy

Laboratory Experiences A large portion of the program focused on laboratory experiences Wax-ups Drilling Preparations Restorative Procedures Amalgam Composite
Laboratory Experiences The students were held to a high standard with regards to quality of work and professional approach The purpose of the laboratory experiences was not to simply “try out” a procedure, but to learn it and appreciate its significance
Clinical Experiences New to the Penn Dental Medicine is the Dental Auxiliary Unit program in which 1 st year and 2 nd year students assist 3 rd and 4 th year students in the clinic To simulate that program, the students were given the proper preparation, and allowed to observe chair-side with working students Prior to entering the clinic floor the students were CPR certified and informed of HIPPA practices
Clinical Experiences Penn Dental Medicine has specialty clinics in many areas: Periodontics Endodontics Pediatric Dentistry Oral Medicine Oral Surgery Radiology Students were given opportunities to observe in the endo, pediatric, and the oral surgery clinics as well
Continuation After Completion After the program ends, three students from each program are selected by the coordinators to participate in the SMP-Plus program SMP-Plus is a year-round program that guides students through the college application process step-by-step The SMP-Plus students also take part in the SMP program for the next year as assistants to the graduate coordinators
