A.K.A. Your Immune System

Function of Lymphatic System The lymphatic system helps the body defend itself against disease and maintain homeostasis.

Components of Blood Plasma White Blood Cells Red Blood Cells

Words you need to know… White Blood Cell (WBC) – protect body from foreign objects Red Blood Cell (RBC) – delivers oxygen to body tissues

Words you need to know… Lymphocyte - type of white blood cell stored in lymph nodes 2 kinds: –T cell: direct and regulate immune responses, whereas others directly attack infected or cancerous cells –B cell: recognize foreign antigens & produce antibodies

Words you need to know… Platelet – helps form blood clots Plasma – mode of transportation

Words you need to know… Lymph - tissue fluids from the blood that have collected and entered the lymph vessels

Glands of Lymphatic System 1. Lymph Nodes 2. Tonsils 3. Spleen 4. Thymus Gland

1. Lymph Nodes – contains lymphocytes and filters pathogens from the lymph Glands of Lymphatic System

2.Tonsils – provide protection against bacteria and other pathogens that enter your nose and mouth Tonsillitis

Glands of Lymphatic System 3. Spleen – organ stores lymphocytes; filters and destroys bacteria and worn-out red blood cells

Glands of Lymphatic System 4. Thymus Gland – stores immature lymphocytes until they are mature and released into bloodstream

Words we need… 1.Verb(ing) 2.Noun 3.Noun 4.Noun 5.Verb 6.Noun 7.Noun 8.Noun 9.Noun 10.Verb(ing) 11.Verb(s) 12.noun

Day in the Life of White Blood Cells (Mr. WBC) Mr. WBC was verb around in the blood hanging out with his noun – oxygen carrying Mr. RBC, Patty the Platelet, and Pete the Plasma. Mr. WBC Pete Mr. RBC Patty

Suddenly, a noun is heard through the bloodstream saying, “Blasted germ has breached our outer shield in left big noun!” Mr. WBC and all his friends rush to the crime scene to help verb the invader.

Once they reach the noun, they can feel the blistering heat. Mr. WBC called on his sidekick, T-Pain the T-cell, to help with the noun. T-Pain

T-Pain loves some juicy noun for breakfast. He surrounds the invader and eats most of it. Then T-Pain calls on his posse, B-Mac the B-Cell. T-Pain

B-Mac is the master of noun. He makes these explosives called antibodies that completely destroy the invader. B-Mac Antibodies

Patty the Platelet goes in to help stop Mr. RBC, Mr. WBC, and everyone else from verb the crime scene. Patty helps fortify the broken shield. Patty

Pete the Plasma verb(s)traffic and helps restore order. Mr. RBC Mr. WBC Patty Pete

Now that the noun is underway… Mr. WBC and his friends can go back to hanging out in the blood.
