ABOUT ME A Realistic Environmentalist Electrical Engineering Student at Beijing Transportation University I love the nature, with her rhythm and beauty, and am always looking for solution based approaches to protect her I founded “Wise Use” in 2004 to minimize the impact of human habitation on limited water resources

About My project Why Did I Found Wise-Use…? Per capita water consumption in Beijing is 4 times the world's average & Per-capita water possession is 1/30 of the world's average 360,000,000 M 3 drinking water is being flushed down the toilet every year in Beijing 21% 30% 20% 6% 21% 2% 冲厕所 Toilet 沐浴 Bathroom 厨房 Kitchen 盥洗 Washing 洗衣 Laundry 饮用 Drinking

Bridging the Gap… A tiny change makes a huge difference Problem: Only one pipe line supplying drinking water for kitchen, bathroom and toilet No profit motive for construction companies to build recycling systems for household waste water Solution: Separate pipelines to sort household wastewater of different quality for recycling Differential cost for using drinking water, treated water and payment for recycling water -- builds market motive to reduce drinking water consumption Technology Economics

Economical Benefit Drinking Water Cost/unit = 3.7 Yuan/Ton Treated Water Cost/unit = 1.0 Yuan/Ton Reclaimed Water Income/unit = 0.5 Yuan/Ton Old Water Expenses = 3.7 Yuan/Ton (Using Only Drinking Water to flush toilet) New Water Expenses = 0.5 Yuan/Ton ( Using recycled water pipelines to flush toilet) Differential cost for using drinking water, treated water and payment for recycling water -- builds market motive to reduce drinking water consumption

Project Steps 1. Foster public awareness of saving water 2. Working with the government and promote a proper policy on wastewater recycling 3. Have our system applied in small groups of buildings 4. Scale up to promote it to a larger area

Step 2 2. Support from the government –The former low water price policy is a obstacle to the system promotion. –We persuaded Municipal Government to put on rise on the water price –From 31 July 2004 on, the water price for daily use increased from 2.9 Yuan to 3.7 Yuan per ton A price hearing

Step 3 3. Working with architect –By exchanging ideas, the architect of our new student’s apartment building, which consists of more than 100,000 meter square, applied part of our design. – At least 30% of water will be saved in these buildings by applying recycling system

Step 4: What’s Next 4. Scaling up to promote to larger area Submitted patent –Once we obtain the patent, we can work with construction companies to scale the system Financial support –We need to build a corporation to promote our system to large area, benefiting more people citywide and then nationwide
