MCS Accreditation 1 What is MCS? The MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certificates microgeneration technologies used to produce electricity and heat from renewable sources. The MCS is also linked to financial incentives which include the Renewable Heat Incentive. It is designed to provide a level of protection and assurance to consumers as well as a sign of quality

2 MIS3005 v4

A full heat loss calculation is now required on a room by room basis following the British Standard BS EN To help the installer complete this there is a free software tool which is available from the MCS website at A full heat loss calculation is now required on a room by room basis following the British Standard BS EN To help the installer complete this there is a free software tool which is available from the MCS website at 3 Heat Loss

Peak Heat Loss Heat loss through a any surface is dependant on:- Surface area Temperature difference ‘U’ value (how well heat flows through the wall) Area x U value x Temperature difference

Room by Room Heat Loss Ventilation rates Internal temperatures Ambient temperatures All are provided in MIS3005

Typical Losses from a building

Annual heat load Heating degree day ( HDD ) is a measurement designed to reflect the demand for energy needed to heat a home or business. It is derived from measurements of outside air temperatures. The heating requirements for a given structure at a specific location are considered to be directly proportional to the number of HDD at that location.demandenergy temperaturestructure To calculate the annual heat load required by a room Wall area x ‘U’Value x Temp difference x degree days Warning internal walls do not have an annual load associated with them. The heat flow from one room will cancel with the heat flow into the room! Degree days will depend on location in the UK

Room is at higher temp. 200W transferred through wall Room is at lower temp. 200W gained from next room Needs to generate extra 200W x Degree Days Heat load is reduced by extra 200W x Degree Days

Heat Loss Calculation 9 Domestic Heating Design Guide

Peak Space Heating demand = 5.188kW Annual Energy Load = 11212kWh/y Worst Performing Room = Bathroom 110W/m2

Heat Emitter Guide Used to:- Provide guidance on sizing of heat emitters Provide an SPF (seasonal performance figure) for the RHI and hence calculate payments. Provide an estimate of running costs to your client

DHW loads
