The Spin Series from the Shot Gun Concordia University The Spin Series from the Shot Gun By Coach Tim Klingbeil

The Spin Series The spin series is derived from the most original offense in all of football… the “Single Wing” The single wing is an offensive formation that is a run-oriented offense featuring multiple backs, a snap, a spin, misdirection and mostly gap/down blocking.

The Spin Series Although the Single-wing has lost much of its popularity since the late 60’s its characteristics and features are still prevalent in all levels of modern football. They include… Pulling guards Double teams Play action passes Laterals Wedge blocking Trap blocking Sweeps

Why the Spin Series? We are able to use some of the classic principals of the Single Wing and convert them into an affective style of modern offense useable here today. Its unique and untraditional. Its a lot of fun!!!

What we can do We have developed a run based package with a complimentary play action game off of it. We can incorporate traditional blocking principals such as Zone and Gap. We can keep the defense on their toes by using misdirection and motion. Its simple enough for our coaches and players to adjust with on the fly.

Rational for Spin Series With so few teams using this style of offense today we enjoy a distinct advantage. There are very few teams that run its concepts there for making it very difficult for opposing defenses to gather film. It is extremely difficult for a team in one week of practice to prepare for an offense that it will face once in a year. Our opponents also have to teach their scout team players to give an accurate simulation of our offense.

Its not hard to teach There is a prevalent myth that this offense is extremely difficult to teach… this is untrue. Although the system is very simple it only appears complex due to the spin action and misdirection of the backfield.

Formations, Motions and Terminology

Position Terminology Backfield Wide Receiver Tags Tight End Tags QB = Quarterback HB = Half Back (Str/Wk when in Shot gun) FB = Fly Back (Away from HB in Shot gun) WB = Wing Back Wide Receiver Tags X = Wide Receiver (Flanker) Z = Wide Receiver (Flanker) H = 1st Slot Wide Receiver (Split End) Y = 2rd Slot Wide Receiver (Split End) Tight End Tags Y = Tight End (Sets strength of formation) H = 2nd Tight End Offensive Line Tags RT = Right Tackle RG = Right Guard C = Center LG = Left Guard LT = Left Tackle

Offensive Hole Numbering System Back Numbering System All eligible backs are numbed. This will coincide with play calling and play terminology. 3 WB 1 4 2 QB FB HB Offensive Hole Numbering System We use a even to the right and odd to the left hole numbering system. 1 9 7 5 3 2 4 6 8 Main Menu

Play Calling 1st Number is who receives the snap, 2nd Number is who takes the ball and the 3rd Number is the assigned hole. 4 3 1 Example: 127 2 East Play call will go as follows Backfield set Strength Formation Motion Play Cadence Example: “Strong, East Wing bone, 127 Blast on 2 on 2 ready break” Strength: East to the right West to the left

Teaching the Spin

Teaching the Spin Its not really a spin but a series of small steps. Full 360 Spin Half 190 Spin Its not really a spin but a series of small steps. To start the toes should be pointing at 12 o’clock. The 1st step is with the inside leg (side of 1st ball career), as he sets this foot down, that foot should be parallel to the line of scrimmage. This position will make the rest of the spin simpler. The next steps simply follow in a coordinated pattern. The 2nd step is with the outside foot. How far the QB’s steps depends on where he is going after he comes out of his spin. Upon receiving the snap The QB should be moving slightly toward the line of scrimmage so as to have a better mesh with the back. This will also aid in misdirection and deception.

Teaching the Spin LW RW “Rip” Motion L R Upon receiving the snap the QB should bring the ball close to his body to aid in hiding the ball. This will help the deception and misdirection. The snap is very important for the spin to work, it must be low and on target. It must be accurate and low (between the knee and thigh) this is how the QB can conceal the ball, which freezes the defense. The motioning back will receive the 1st hand off or hand off fake. The 2nd back will take the 2nd hand off or the 2nd fake. The timing must be practiced to perfection.
