Measuring Tools By Ryan Saucier

I-Beam Type Level Used to measure how level flat surfaces or several objects are in relation to each other. Ex: Determining how level the floor is in a house.

Torpedo Level Used for tight spaces. Generally, they are magnetic and great for metal work. Not as accurate as longer levels.

Line Level Hung on a string that is suspended between two points. Great for level masonry, dirt work, etc.

Folding Rulers Great when you need a rigid measuring instrument. Predecessor to the tape measure and is somewhat obsolete to a modern tape measure.

Tape Measure Most commonly used measuring device. Available in both English and Metric systems. Available in various lengths as well. Most common is the 25 foot length.

Open Reel Fiberglass Measuring Tapes Used to measure long distances where a tape measure is too short. Great for dirt work, etc. Fast retrieval of the tape with foldable handle.

Laser Levels Uses a laser beam of energy to project a line or a spot on an object.

Transit Level and Rod Used by landscapers, engineers, etc. to determine if points of land are level and/ or the difference in elevation.

Calipers Used to measure the outside or inside edges of objects. Used for gaining precise measurements.

Dial Calipers

Calipers Used to measure the distance on the outside or inside of an object and then measure from point to point with a ruler or tape measure.

Steel Ruler Used for precision measurements. Available in English or Metric systems.

Outside Micrometer Used for gaining extremely precise outside measurements on objects. Used in agricultural mechanics for rebuilding engines, etc.

Digital Outside Micrometer Used for gaining extremely precise outside measurements on objects. Has a digital read out that allows for easier use.

Inside Micrometer Used for gaining extremely precise inside measurements on objects. Ex: The cylinder diameter inside an engine.

Telescoping Hole Gauges Used for measuring inside holes that are too small for an inside micrometer or when an inside micrometer is not available. To use, you place the gauge inside the hole, release the spring loaded head and allow it to spread and the lock it into position. Next, remove the telescoping hole gauge from the hole and measure the distance with a micrometer.

Depth Gauge Used to measure the depth of a hole.
