Fun with Fractions! 4 th Grade Math By Crista Christensen

TEKS – Grade 4 (4.2) Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student describes and compares fractional parts of whole objects or sets of objects. – The student is expected to: (A) use concrete objects and pictorial models to generate equivalent fractions; (B) model fraction quantities greater than one using concrete objects and pictorial models; (C) compare and order fractions using concrete objects and pictorial models; and (D) relate decimals to fractions that name tenths and hundredths using concrete objects and pictorial models.

Questions… Essential Question : – Is the whole more important than the parts it is made of? Unit Questions : – What are some basic fractions and their equivalent decimals? – How do we use fractions and decimals outside of the classroom?

Lesson Objective: After completing this unit, students will recognize basic fractions and their equivalent decimals. They will be able to provide concrete examples that demonstrate their understanding. Also, students will know how fractions and decimals can be used throughout their lives.

Fractions A fraction is a part or portion of a whole. Example: 1 Whole Shape 1/2 Shape - Fraction 1/3 Shape - Fraction 1/4 Shape - Fraction

Decimals A decimal is a part or portion of a whole (like a fraction). Example: 1 Whole Shape 0.5 Shape - Decimal 0.33 Shape - Decimal 0.25 Shape - Decimal

Fractions & Decimals Chart Example #1: What fraction represents the number of red apples? - 3/4 FractionDecimal / / /2¼0.5 1/30.33 ¾1/40.25 Example #2: What decimal represents the number of green apples?

Who Uses Fractions & Decimals?

Measurements Measuring tools: Ruler, Tape measure, Yard stick, Thermometer, Measuring cups & spoons, Scales, etc. How to Read a Ruler: As the ruler below shows, the biggest line is the whole number, the medium sized line is the fraction ½, and the smaller lines represent ¼ and ¾. Most rulers break it down into even smaller fractions but for now we will just look at these. Ruler Activity: After finding a partner, come get 2 large sheets of paper and 1 piece of colored chalk. Place 1 sheet of paper on the floor and lay down on it. Have your partner trace your body. Then switch! I’ll come around with a tape measure (a long ruler) and you can tell me how tall you are!

Pizza Party!!! 1 whole pizza3/4 or 0.75 of a pizza Activity: I will have 4 pizzas on the front table that are cut into different numbers of slices. After everyone writes down how many slices were in each whole pizza, I will remove some slices from each box. Each student must then write down the fraction and decimal that matches each pizza. When we’re all done….PIZZA PARTY! If somebody takes a slice how much is left?
