Luke 7:11-17

If we want to see the corpse this morning, we’d better hope the funeral director has a drive-thru window! Jesus is going to show up & raise the body! D. L. Moody: “I was called to preach at a funeral once, and I thought I would try to preach as nearly as I could as Christ used to preach. So I searched the record, but I found that Jesus Christ never preached a funeral sermon; for when he went to a funeral the dead body always arose and lived.”

Luke 7:11-17 This is “ A Fast Funeral.”

A Forlorn Funeral vv 11-12

“He went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her” (vv 11-12, ESV).

Jesus sees a very forlorn situation – a widow has lost her only son. Women didn’t have careers in Jesus’ day & they relied on their husbands and sons for support. Ruth followed behind the reapers to gather grain for herself & Naomi. In 1 Tim 5:3-4, Paul instructs the church to provide for widows who have no children. The widow at Nain has lost her only son – she is going to be at the mercy of others.

Every funeral is a forlorn funeral!

A Felt Funeral v 13

“And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, ‘Do not weep’ ” (v 13, ESV).

The Lord sees this woman’s suffering & he intensely feels her suffering. “Compassion” means to be “moved in the bowels.” In antiquity, the bowels were considered the seat of emotions. Of course, when you are upset, you often feel it in your gut. Jesus turns this funeral into “A Felt Funeral” – he feels deep emotion for the suffering widow.

Jesus demonstrated deep compassion to the suffering. “Moved with pity, [Jesus] stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, ‘I will; be clean’ ” (Mk 1:41, ESV). Because of the highly contagious nature of leprosy, you simply do not reach out & touch a leper. But, Jesus, with great compassion, reaches out & touches this man. When Jesus is in Bethany following the death of Lazarus, the Lord sees the great outpouring of grief & he weeps (Jn 11:35). Why would Jesus weep over someone he’s about to raise? John records that when Jesus saw Mary & those with her weeping, he was greatly troubled (Jn 11:33)

As further evidence of Jesus compassion, Jesus touched the brier upon which the corpse lay. That act made Jesus ceremonially unclean. Jesus’ compassion overrode any concern for ritual purity.

I have no doubt that every funeral is “ A Felt Funeral ” – Jesus is very touched with our grief. Death is an enemy of the Lord (1 Cor 15:25-26). Our God cares greatly for us. “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Lk 12:6-7, ESV). “Does Jesus care when I’ve said ‘goodbye’ To the dearest on earth to me, And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks, Is it aught to Him? Does He see?” We don’t need the chorus to let us know that he cares! I have the Word of God to assure me of his concern in the darkest of nights!

A Finished Funeral vv 14-15

“Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, ‘Young man, I say to you, arise.’ And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother” (vv 14-15, ESV). Jesus comes up to the brier & turns this into “ A Finished Funeral.” Jesus orders the young man to arise. He gets up & begins to speak. Luke likely mentions the speaking to demonstrate that this resurrection really did occur.

The great power the Lord Jesus has over death! But, each of those whom Jesus raised is dead this morning. However, Jesus was raised never to die again. “We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him” (Rom 6:9, ESV). “I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades” (Rev 1:17-18, ESV). “The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord” (1 Thess 4:16-17, ESV).

When Jesus comes again, talk about “A Finished Funeral”!

A Famous Funeral vv 16-17

“Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, ‘A great prophet has arisen among us!’ and ‘God has visited his people!’ And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country” (vv , ESV). The people at this funeral quickly realize they have been to a funeral like no other!

This funeral becomes very famous – the report spreads throughout “all the surrounding country.” How could this funeral not become very famous? Each of us has seen the dead raised! We have seen individuals dead in sin resurrected to a new life in Jesus! “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Rom 6:4, ESV).

How can we not tell others of the great Savior who can raise the dead???

People are dying in sin everyday – How can we do nothing?!?! “Go... and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt 28:19-20, ESV). Shall we be those who go?

Do you need to come & be resurrected this morning?
