How to do Long Division Part One (Dirty Monkeys Smell)
Mnemonic – memory aid Dirty: Divide Monkeys: Multiply Smell: Subtract
Vocabulary Words for the parts of the problem quotient remainder divisor dividend product
Step One -- Divide Look at the problem. Decide how many times the divisor can go into the dividend without going over. “Twenty-three can be divided into two equal groups of eight with some left over.” Think: How many times can 8 go into 23 without going over? 2 8 23
Step Two – Multiply Multiply the divisor by the quotient. Write your answer under the dividend. Think: 2 x 8 = 16 2 8 23 16
Step Three – Subtract Subtract the product from the dividend. If the answer is less than the divisor, it becomes your remainder. Think: 23 – 16 = 7 Seven is less than 8, so it becomes your remainder. 2 R 7 8 23 16 7
Review first three steps Dirty – divide the dividend by the divisor. Monkeys – multiply the quotient by the divisor and write the answer under the dividend. Smell – subtract the product from the dividend.
Your turn Divide the dividend by the divisor. 6 25 6 25 (How many equal groups of six can you create out of twenty-five?)
Your turn Multiply the divisor by the quotient. Write the answer under the dividend. 4 6 25 (What’s 6 x 4?)
Your turn Subtract the product from the dividend. If the answer is less than the divisor it becomes the remainder. 4 6 25 24 (What is 25 – 24?)
Check your work 4 R 1 6 25 24 1 (Did you get it right?)
