Re-farming of the 2G frequency bands for the mobile broadband systems -Completion report- April 2015, Cambodia ASEAN ICT Project
Objective To propose guidelines on the technology transition from 2G to the mobile broadband Collect information on 2G bands re-farming Survey on re-farming 2G band for mobile broadband systems Conduct a workshop (Nov 2013) Final report (Apr 2014) Work plan
Survey questionnaire Current situation: allocation, technology & applications Future usage plan Transfer timetable, solution, roadmap, & licensing method for re-farming Obstacles/difficulties in re-farming 2G bands
Conduct a workshop Date & venue: Oct 2013, Hanoi, Vietnam Participants: – AMS delegates – Speakers: Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Europe/ Industry: Ericsson, GSMA, Huawei, Qualcomm
Workshop outcomes The benefit of re-farming of 2G bands Re-farming 2G bands-Case studies Mobile broadband technologies use 2G bands Re-farming solution
Recommendations & Findings Views on technology: – Mobile broadband technologies are proposed to take consideration in process of re-farming of 2G bands are HSPA/+ and LTE in which LTE is considered to be the industry trend in the 1800 MHz band. – The UMTS900 is a mainstream technology. Technology solutions: Multi-RAT frequency resource allocation, Non-standard frequency separation planning, Buffer zone Re-farming solutions: Traffic balance, GSM traffic migration
Findings (cont.) The regulatory environment is different in ASEAN members so that project workers must try the best to clarify the huge benefits that the project brings for all members. Seeking more support from as well as cooperation with other international organizations, especially in the stage of consultation and conducting a workshop, for ASEAN projects will be a good approach to enhance quality of projects and give more useful experiences.
