Project Overview Roberta Bondar Outreach Calendar - Our link between school and community

Project Overview The idea started in 2009

Project Overview Every start of the school year the calendar is given to every family so that it may be placed in the family home in the “Family Central Communication Zone” ie. The kitchen area, the study The calendar highlights special dates throughout the year such as Spirit Days, Assemblies, School holidays and other events. The calendar also highlights Day 1, 2, etc. Notification of these dates allows parents and guardians to plan accordingly in order to attend these events or prepare their children for these events

Project Overview Encouraging Participation

Project Overview Encouraging Participation

Student Success Promoting a healthy lifestyle by encouraging outdoor activities and awareness of activities at the local Recreation Center Building partnerships with our families and with the larger community (Parks and Recreation Center) Encouraging “out-of-the-box” thinking concepts by introducing students to new experiences, which in their “normal” weekend routine they may not have incorporated

Student Success Encouraging students to participate in these new experiences with their families, thereby enhancing family time Encouraging Family involvement by advertising important school events at the start of the school year so that families may plan accordingly Reinforcing time management and responsibility Giving students a sense of achievement

Student Success

Budget Each Spring we ask for donations from Families and School Staff We solicit donations from Community Businesses for printing costs and for the purchase of monthly prizes Donors are recognized by having their names printed on the calendar pages along with their business logos A portion of the Parent Engagement Funds have been used to support the calendar The total printing cost of the calendar is approximately $3500 The total for the prizes is approximately $1500

Budget

Impact Initially data was collected with respect to the number of ballots returned and the kinds of activities families were doing together In an effort to increase the number of ballots, especially during the colder winter months, we began giving out small prizes such as bookmarks and pencils for each ballot that was submitted We also created a grand prize draw for a gift certificate for the CN Tower and an indoor water park. Families who handed in multiple ballots over several months were entered in the draws

Impact Over the 4 years that we have been doing this project we have received significant feedback from our parents about how helpful the calendar is for their family Annually we have asked School Council for specific feedback and they consistently tell us that they don’t know how they could manage without the calendar
