AQA ISAs Organisation and preparation for section 1 and section 2 papers. Ensuring consistency of delivery and marking

A possible way of organising it  Collapse science lessons to concentrate on ISAs for 7 lessons.  This means that the 3 KS4 teachers (biol, chem and phys) each do different parts of the ISA (organisation is key – link to an example of instructions each teacher gets for each lesson) organisation is keyorganisation is key  Y9 HSW lessons linked to developing skills  Y ISAs (best mark taken)  Y ISA (unless doing triple science then 1 for each of phys, biol and chem)  Split marking between department

1. Introduction and Preparation Intro to ISA, research HW, review theory The 7 lessons :

Preparing for Section 1  Introduce, emphasise importance (25% of GCSE) and give out research HW.  Review theory and demonstrate practical to be carried out. (link to the presentation given to students in their 1 st ISA lesson) Review theory and demonstrate practical to be carried out. Review theory and demonstrate practical to be carried out.  Specific Glossary of terms (terms given to students in their 1 st lesson to learn) Specific Glossary of terms Specific Glossary of terms  HW sheet (homework given to students in the 1 st lesson to do as research) HW sheet HW sheet  (link given to students to help with research)

1. Introduction and Preparation Intro to ISA, research HW, review theory 2. Fill in CRN (limited control), as detailed as possible 3. Section 1 exam (high control) 4. Practical (limited control) example of methodexample of method and table table example of methodtable 5. Graph drawing How to draw a graph How to draw a graph (presentation shown to students to teach them) then High control – students draw graph How to draw a graph 6. Prepare for section 2 Defining keywords and asking students to relate them to the investigation The 7 lessons :

Preparing for Section 2  The paper is split into 2 main parts:  Analysing student’s own results  Analysing other results and putting into context  Resources (presentation given to students to teach them the key terms and give them ideas of how to answer questions using previous ISAs to aid them) Resources

Marking  Consistency marking the method  Moderation  What results do we get? higher end sets targeted B+ = 37/50 section 1 = 17/20, section 2 = 20/30 lower end sets targeted D/C = 27/50 section 1 = 12/20, section 2 = 15/30 higher end sets targeted B+ = 37/50 section 1 = 17/20, section 2 = 20/30 lower end sets targeted D/C = 27/50 section 1 = 12/20, section 2 = 15/30 Grade Boundaries this summer: A* = 39 A = 35 B = 31 C = 28 D = 22 E = 17 F = 12 G = 7  Students taking FT can achieve B on the back of a good ISA

Discussion  Ways to improve preparation for section 1 paper  Ways to improve preparation for section 2
