Haiku

I would use this power point presentation to introduce the Haiku to an English class. The haiku is a form of Japanese poetry consisting of 17 syllables divided into three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively. Most Haiku’s also include a seasonal theme, although it is not required. Since the Haiku is a minimalist form of poetry, and since it is patently Japanese, I decided to include those two elements into my presentation. I included various images depicting Japanese life and culture centering on a one or two word theme to draw the pictures together. I would hope that the strong visual images and the one word descriptions would help spark an interest and motivate the students to write their own Haiku. I also hope to help the students better understand the Japanese way of life and how it relates to this style of poetry. Steve Byars
