IFRC Shelter Technical Training Yverdon-Les-Bains, Switzerland | 3 rd – 7 th March 2008 Mechanisms for building back safer Repair: assess damage and possibility of repairing, perform technical surveys, use techniques to reduce vulnerability Rebuild: structures that cannot be repaired need to be demolished and rebuilt, reasons for failure identified and technical solutions incorporated Retrofit: protect against future hazards by installing safety features and retrofit techniques Relocate: avoid relocation when possible, however when an area is too hazardous resettlement may need to be restricted. Use hazard maps to avoid relocation to other hazardous areas
