Harnessing the Power of Guided Reading Jan richardson

Next Steps in Guided Reading by Jan Richardson K – identify number of letters BOY/work on letters until they have 40 letters (uppercase and lowercase) then move them to reading groups Step 1 Tracing ABC book w/tutor, one on one every day Step 2 Pre-A lesson framework (20 minutes) - work w/ letters and names - work w/sounds - work w/ books - interactive writing

Guided Reading in Kindergarten Start with “a is for apple”; just the letter name w/ no sounds Top to bottom/trace it/say it Correct student if not top to bottom Use of finger is important/Brain based Work on sounds/Clap syllables/Work w/rhymes Discuss pictures/Shared reading Target oral language and concepts of print Use pointing stick until level C (don’t use finger) “You can take the stick, but you can’t take the finger.” Lots of Interactive Writing

Assess – Decide – Guide - Practice Assess – Use assessments to pinpoint a focus “If the assessment is not driving instruction, then you are wasting time.” Decide – Form groups and select text Guide – Use “Next Steps” Framework Emergent A – C Early D-I Transitional J-M Fluent N

“DIBELS is a screening device; not a benchmark” “If you want me to make him faster on DIBELS, then tell him to just skip the words that he doesn’t know” “He’s using STRATEGIES and that’s what we want!” Next Step Guided Reading Before (3 minutes) Quick Preview / Vocabulary During (12 minutes) Students read (& write) / Teacher prompts and scaffolds After ( 5 minutes) Conversation / Word Study / Guided Writing The focus for Transitional students is decoding, fluency, and retell. The focus for Fluent students is deeper comprehension.

Why Emergent Readers Struggle… Emergent Readers struggle due to lack of… Oral language skills Attention to print Visual memory (sight words) Hearing and using sounds in words Teach Sight Words What’s Missing Mix & Fix – (s-a-i-d say it as you make it / say it as you write it) It’s not memorizing. It’s automatic! Start with letters, then finger, then white board Draw a line for each word.
