General Electrical System Diagnosis Demonstrate knowledge of the causes and effects from shorts, grounds, opens, and resistance problems in electrical/electronic circuits. A6.A.4 A short circuit is simply a low resistance connection between the two conductors supplying electrical power to any circuit. This results in excessive current flow in the power source through the 'short,' and may even cause the power source to be destroyed. If a fuse is in the supply circuit, it will do its job and blow out, opening the circuit and stopping the current flow. P-1

A6.A.8 PARASITIC DRAIN Check for excessive battery drain or parasitic loads using an ammeter. Make sure all electrical loads are off in the car, doors closed, and the key is out of the ignition switch. Disconnect one of the battery cables from the battery, placing an ammeter in series between the battery post and cable clamp. The current draw reading should be less than 35 milliamps. A reading higher than this (or manufacturer specifications) would indicate excessive battery drain. Something is "on", allowing current to flow running down the battery. Vehicles today typically will draw less than.020 amps (20 milliamps) of current to maintain electronic memories and circuits. P-1

A6.H Reprogramming for General Motor/GM Vehicles can be preformed with the Pegisys PC and the Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) hardware is J and J compliant. What does this mean? The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J standard applies for all emissions-related systems on 2004 and newer vehicles. The California Air Resources Board (ARB) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have both passed legislation mandating vehicle manufacturers comply with the standard. SAE J standard applies to vehicles older than 2004 and non-emissions systems. VCI For example, a device compliant to the J is required if you want to reprogram all the supported General Motors controllers and those vehicle older than The Pegisys PC tool and VCI provide two tools in one and offer a high end diagnostic tool with a connection to the car and Internet capability and a J2534 compliant device for vehicle reprogramming.
