INTEGRATING COGNITIVE AND STRUCTURED TECHNIQUES

REBT  Ask client to make a sandtray for each of the steps of ABCDE  A activating event “can you make a sandtray about a situation that made you angry?  B belief “can you make a sandtray about what you told yourself about the situation  C Consequences- Can you make a sandtray about what this anger was like  D Dispute- “I wonder if there is a different way of responding. Can you question your own angry thoughts? Can you make a tray of another way to look at the situation  E Effect- “What would your preferred way respond?”

PAIN GETTING BETTER TECHNIQUE  Make tray of pain  Make tray of pain all better  Make tray of what will change the first tray to the second tray

SOLUTION FOCUSED “MIRACLE QUESTION”  See page 59 for Solution Focused questions

ROLE PLAYING  “Empty chair” technique can be adapted to sandtray by using miniatures to stand for empty chair. Miniatures can take on roles.  Clients can make up story to illustrate issues or feelings
