Gumball Machine Layout 7 th Grade Woods Project

What is The Technology Design Cycle?

Investigate What design specs are we looking for? Where will some of my ideas come from to create my design? What do I know already about simple machines? Do I have the skills needed? What skills do I need to perfect or learn? Identify the problem Develop a design Formulate a design

Plan What would be considered a plan for this project? How do you begin a plan? How is investigation used to implement a plan? When will you be planning during the design of the gumball machine? Design a solution Plan a product/solution

Create What tools will you be using to create your simple machines? What skills do you have that you might be applying to the creation of your machine? What materials will you be utilizing to make your gumball machine? Use appropriate techniques Follow the plan Create the product/solution

Evaluate Do my simple machines work together? How could you improve your design to allow your simple machines to work together more effectively? Evaluate the product/solution Evaluate the Use of the Design Cycle

Investigate What design specs are we looking for? Project must have a minimum of four simple machines All simple machines should work together Project must be able to store gumballs Gumballs must land in the bottom tray without falling out. Identify the problem Develop a design Formulate a design

Top 8 ¼” 3 ¼”

Side Pieces Side B 9 ” Side A 9 ” 2 1/2”

Bottom 10” 4”

Top Piece -Preparing Center Hole 8 ¼” 3 ¼” 1.Draw two straight lines from corner to corner. 2.Receive approval for layout from your teacher. 3.Mark the center of the top piece with an awl. 4.Prepare for drilling a 1” hole on the top piece.

Side Pieces-Layout for Dowel Hole Side B 1 ¼ ” Side A 2 ½ ” 1 ¼ ” 1.Find the center from top to bottom on both side pieces. 2.Draw the line. 3.Measure and layout 2 ½” from the top to find the center of the dowel hole. 4.Receive approval of layout. 5.Center punch center for drilling.

Bottom-Layout for Tray Hole 1 ¼ ” 2” 1.Measure and mark the center at 2” on the base plate. 2.Draw a straight line from end to end. 3.Measure and mark 1 ¼” to find the center of the tray. 4.Receive approval for layout from the teacher. 5.Center punch center for the 1 ¼” hole.
