What the law says Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety)Order 2005, it is a legal requirement that in the event of a fire you have trained staff who can take control of the situation and help in the effective evacuation of staff and members of the public.

Fire Marshal – Key Responsibilities You are required to; Report any faulty fire prevention or fire fighting equipment Make sure personnel know where fire alarm point are located along with all escape routes Make sure notices are correctly sited In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuation employees and visitors from buildings

Prepare Find out who in your area/corridor/department is Fire Marshal Trained Organise with them which areas you will cover e.g. If you are located in the middle of A corridor you may agree to cover from the middle to the entrance/exit doors. Another colleague will cover from the middle to the main entrance. If you are in D corridor you may agree to cover the toilets opposite your office.

When the alarm sounds Put on your hi-vis vest. Evacuate people towards the nearest fire exit and away from any fire. Once outside direct them to the nearest assembly point. Wait for further instruction from somebody with a portable radio

Frequently Asked Questions I don't know where to cover? This is why we recommend you communicate with others in your area. Do we have too many in one corridor? We have as many as we can. We need to ensure there is cover when sickness or annual leave is taking place. You may also be called upon to assist in other areas

Frequently Asked Questions I don't know where my nearest assembly point is? The map of campus has been circulated and is available on the SHE Department Glynfo site. Can we have an assembly point nearer to F corridor so we don't have to walk as far? All Assembly points have been chosen for a reason, it is for your safety if there is an explosion, for example, you need to be a distance away from the building.

Frequently Asked Questions A staff member has an issue with movement what can we do with him/her? Staff/students who have declared a disability have completed a PEEP. This PEEP details what the person is capable of doing and how they are to be evacuated. The PEEP is a document to be shared with staff where necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions How do I evacuate a person in a wheelchair from the first floor or above? There are refuge points around the University, these are due to have signs and communication systems put in them. Alternatively where safe to do so, place the person in a room close the door and report it immediately to a member of staff with a portable radio.

Any Questions?
