Laboratory Safety Who is required to attend? Employees possibly exposed to hazardous materials while working in academic, clinical, or research laboratories. ASU Continually strives to provide a learning, teaching, and research environment free from recognized hazards. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates, 29 CFR and 29 CFR , the University and requires establishment of this Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) to protect employees and students from potential health hazards associated with handling, use, and storage of hazardous chemicals in laboratories.

Laboratory Safety - Findings Most common types of violations noted.  Lab Registrations Expired (12 months).  Less than 18” / 24” clearance between storage and sprinklers / non sprinkler protected buildings.  Compressed Cylinder storage.  Chemical Inventory not up to date.

Laboratory Safety - CHP Chemical Hygiene Plan Understand the physical and chemical hazards in your laboratory Understand the safe handling, use, and storage of chemicals and hazardous waste in your laboratory Consult your supervisor if unsure of the safe handling, use, and storage of the hazardous chemicals Be familiar with the location and contents of MSDS’s Keep your area and laboratory clean and organized Be aware of training requirements for your laboratory Report all accidents/incidents to your supervisor Supervisors The PI or laboratory supervisor must give additional training relative to the specific hazardous chemicals in their laboratory. Ensure all Material Safety Data Sheet’s (MSDS) are available and employees are trained in the use and comprehension of them

Laboratory Safety in regards to Fire Safety Fire Extinguishers in the Laboratory  At ASU we utilize 5lbs ABC type Fire Extinguishers. Clear and accessible egress (Fire Load) Knowing where all of exits out of the Laboratory. Maximum Quantities per Control Area (Chemical Inventory). Knowing how to activate the Fire Alarm System (Manual Pull Station), and where they are located. Knowing about the Fire Sprinkler System  If the building has one.  Facts and myths about Sprinkling Systems.
