haikus are easy but sometimes they don't make sense refrigerator

The haiku is a specialized form of poetry that originates in Japan. The structure of the haiku is based off of syllables. Traditional haikus are about nature. However, in modern times, the haiku has been used to write about a variety of subjects.  LINE 1: 5 syllables  LINE 2: 7 syllables  LINE 3: 5 syllables

“…haiku has not changed much from the days of medieval Japan. The essence of one moment of wisdom captured within a few, short lines is still what inspires writers and draws audiences from around the world.” “"Haiku is more than a form of poetry; it is a way of seeing the world. Each haiku captures a moment of experience; an instant when the ordinary suddenly reveals its inner nature and makes us take a second look at the event, at human nature, at life." -A.C. Missias”

Haikus have some sort of wisdom embedded into them! They make the reader think about something a new way! Haikus capture a moment in time!

Please take out your small personal item! The item you hold in your hand holds some kind of personal meaning to you, but to others, it may hold no meaning, or a quite different meaning. I want you guys to think critically about your item, and answer the following questions…

Where did you get your item from? What special experiences have you had with this item? What is the meaning of the item to you? Why is it so important to you? Where did this item originate from? That is, where was it made? What is it made out of? Where does this material come from? Where has it been before it reached you? What might this item mean to other people or other living things? (ex. the cost of leather to a cow is its life.) What possible things could this item symbolize?

Mickey Mouse Watch I bought this watch as a “purchase with purchase” item at Disneyland. I have worn it to work because I really don’t like my other job, and it cheers me up to see Mickey’s smiling face whenever I look down at my wrist. It also gives other people an idea about who I am and what I like (DISNEY!) It’s important to me because I really like the design, and it cheers me up whenever I see it. It was made in China, which makes me worry about sweatshop labor. It was probably shipped to California and then to Disneyland where it was unloaded and put out into the store on Main Street. It is made out of leather, metal, and glass. To me, it means happiness, and memories of being someplace where I am infinitely happy. However, to those who made it, it may symbolize their paychecks and how they survive and pay for the lives of their family. To a cow, it meant its life since the band is made out of leather. To each thing that has touched or created this watch, it meant something different.

Tiny smiling face counts time go by under glass held by bands of death

On Friday we will be having a Halloween Haiku Slam! Each of you will be performing (at least) one haiku for the class. The haiku can only be about… Halloween/All Hallow’s Eve Holiday Fall/Autumn Season Something to do with your costume (if you choose to wear one) For these haikus, there does not need to be any special wisdom included! They can just be fun or amusing poems! Of course, if you would like your haiku to include some sort of special wisdom you would like to depart on us all, go for it!
