At the end of this lesson you will be able to: List the four basic house designs. Explain the chief advantages of each house design. List disadvantages of each house design. Distinguish among designs.
The choices available are : 1.One-story or Ranch 2.One-and-one-half-story, 3.Two-story, 4.Split-level.
Advantages: 1.Affords Indoor-Outdoor Living. 2.Absence of stairs except for in basements. 3.Low Pitched Walls wide overhang Roofs. 4.Maintenance is easy. 5.Simplified Construction. 6.May have basement or crawl space. Can you think of other advantages?
Disadvantages: 1.More costly to build because of roof and foundation area (sq ft). 2. Requires a larger lot. 3. Heating may be a problem if its depended on a furnace. 4. Maintenance cost may be more because of larger roof and exterior wall area. 6. Hall space must be kept to a minimum. Can you think of other disadvantages?

Advantages: 1.Allows for expansion of the attic. 2.Dormers are added for additional Light. 3.Economy in cost per unit of habitable Space. 4.Heating cost is minimized. 5.Cooled by use of louvered windows. 6.More economical to build than ranch. Can you think of other advantages?
Can you think of other disadvantages? Disadvantages: 1.Adequate ventilation is needed especially in the summer. 1.Minimum attic space less than 5ft. is considered unusable. 3.Dormers, stairs and a slightly steeper roof are principal additional costs. 4. Can you think of other advantages? Advantages: 1. Requires a smaller lot. 2. Has smaller roof and foundation area compared to the ranch. 3. Heating and cooling is simple and comparatively economical. 4. Ventilation is easy and effective when windows are used properly. 5. Has given way to more contemporary styles.
Can you think of other disadvantages? Disadvantages: 1.Generally exterior maintenance is more costly because of the height. 2.For some people the need to climb stairs is considered a disadvantage. 3.Not as popular as before but has taken on a contemporary look.

Advantages: 1. Uses sloping or hilly lot to advantage. 2. Makes efficient use of space. 3. Separates sleeping, living and recreation area on different levels. 4. Little or no hall space is required. 5. There are variations to the split-level: Side by side split Front to back split Back to front split. Can you think of other advantages?
Disadvantages: 1.Cannot and should not be built on a flat lot. 2.Generally more expensive to build than two- story homes but cheaper than the ranch. 2.Heating may be a problem if not handled properly. Can you think of other disadvantages? For a large collection of level homes visit:

Visit any architectural firm or city planning office and talk to Architects, Designers, Planners or Builders to develop greater understanding of house designs.
Clip pictures or take photographs of examples of the four basic house designs studied in this chapter—ranch, one-and-one-half- story, two-story, and split-level. Write a brief description of each style. Add this material to your portfolio. Start a collection of architectural designs. Collect pictures from magazines, newspapers, and advertising pamphlets, or use your own photographs to illustrate the various traditional and contemporary house styles. Include pictures of the current trends in architecture as well. Label the house style illustrated by each picture and list the identifying features of each design. Add this material to your portfolio. Portfolios will be presented in Face to Face session August 20, 2008.
