James E. Slaughter, Colonel John S. Ford and Theodore H. Barrett…commander Barrett had been an officer since 1862, but was without combat experience.
The battle didn’t last very long like other battles. The battle lasted three days. May 12, 1865-May 15, 1865.
The confederates suffered only 5 minor wounds in the skirmist at Palmito Ranch. 30 union soldiers were killed or wounded and 113 suffered.
The last fighting by land forces of any size during the war, Palmito Ranch was a confederate victory!! It’s outcome had absolutely no bearing on the war and was a useless waste of life. The engagement was evenly fought, the war was ending all the same.
None, the battle of Palmito Ranch had no affect on the Civil War and was completely pointless.
The battle of Palmito Ranch was the last battle of the Civil War.
Palmito was the last battle of the Civil War. John S. Ford was often called “Rest in peace.” (R.I.P) In order to avoid a formal surrender, Col. Ford disbanded his Cavalry of the West 13 days after his victory at Palmito Ranch.
