British Army weapons The word artillery was used to describe large- calibre mounted firearms. The calibre is the diameter of its barrel bore. In the 19th century artillery was divided into light and heavy, depending on the weight of solid shot fired. Light guns, deployed at battalion level, were usually 4-6 pounders, whereas heavy guns were 8-12 pounders. At the beginning of the First World War the main support weapon for the British Army was the long-barreled field gun. Also available was the QF (quick-firing) field gun that had a system that bounced the barrel back into firing position.
German weapons The most common sub machine gun the Germans used was the MP40.The term Schmeisser was used in reference to a sub machine gun. The MP40 was not created by Schmeisser, and the weapon was far simple and had a much cleaner design, thus it remained a standard issue for the German troops. An earlier design called the MP38 had a similar appearance and saw widespread distribution. A less known model called Erma was also made as well as a German copy of the British STEN gun, called MP3008.The Waffen- SS used a submachine gun made by Bergman called the MP34 also. The standard German infantry weapon was the rifle, originally designed by Mauser and dubbed the Karabiner 98k. This weapon was a 5-shot, bolt- action rifle that actually dated back to 1898 when it was first adopted by the Imperial German Army. It was standardissue for German troops in WWI and, in its modified 98k version (k for kurz, or short), in WWII as well.
