Helping Others feels Great* Chantel Owens Freshman Seminar

My Freshman Seminar class had a Car Wash on April 01, 2006 from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm. The car wash was held at the Red Lobster on St. Augustine. The money we earned was given to the Second Harvest Food bank.

About Second Harvest… America's Second Harvest of South Georgia is the largest Hunger Relief organization in South Georgia. The facility annually provides over 6 million pounds of food to over 300 local charities each year. America's Second Harvest of South Georgia hosts programs like The Valdosta Food Bank, Rescue Valdosta, Kids Cafe', Manna Truck, and the Community Kitchen Program.

The mission of America's Second Harvest of South Georgia, Inc. is to end hunger in South Georgia. To create a means to easily and affordably access food for every person in South Georgia, To feed children and provide a safe environment for children to grow and learn, To provide the means to rescue and safely store all donated excess food in our region, and To ensure that every community that relies on the services of America's Second Harvest of South Georgia, Inc. is adequately assisted in the fight against hunger. SL Mason’s Principal’s Message! At S. L. Mason Elementary we are driven to provide the very best education for our children. Our academic and social goals are set high, and we feel that all of our children have the right to be challenged everyday. Strong teaching and the sincere love for our children produce our high test scores and good citizenship. We are determined to work closely with our parents, students, and outside resources to achieve and maintain the high standards that we have set for ourselves. S. L. Mason's faculty and staff are committed to improving every aspect of our educational setting. We realize that each child is special in his/her own way, and we want to encourage them to soar!

President’s Day Out… This was the station that I helped with. It was the “Virginia Station”. The teacher told the students how Virginia is known as “the presidents state” because eight presidents were natives to this state.

How to Play… There were eight Frisbees, one for each president, and the object was to toss the Frisbees into the crates.

A Field Day at SL Mason…

In conclusion, working with the community has been a great experience. I liked knowing that I was working for a good cause. Yeah, maybe I was not being able to pocket the money or I could have been going out somewhere with my friends but knowing I was working to help people felt better in the end.
