Independent Living Philosophy DRAIL is dedicated to working toward the objectives of the Disability Rights and Independent Living Movement through the provisions of core services designed to improve and empower the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

DRAIL’s MISSION STATEMENT The Disability Resource Agency for Independent Living - DRAIL, Inc. is dedicated to increasing the independence of individuals with disabilities through resources, advocacy, and services.

History of the Independent Living Movement Ed Roberts is the founding father of the independent living movement. The movement began in the early 60’s in Berkeley California while Roberts was a student at UC Berkeley.

Intake and Assessment Process Intake and assessments by appointment. Office or in-home appointment. Independent Living Plan is developed with consumer establishing goals and objectives Mutual participation between consumer and service provider. Non-contracted services from DRAIL are free of charge.

Information and Referral Provides information or referrals on current services and resources for individuals with disabilities.

Housing Provides information, education, and advocacy on accessible and low income housing. Landlord Tennant Rights. Referrals to Legal Assistance.

Advocacy SYSTEMSINDIVIDUAL

Individual Advocacy Empowers and provides assistance to individuals with disabilities. Helps persons develop knowledge and skills for effective future advocacy activities.

Systems Advocacy Develops partnerships between the centers and the consumers working to create change within a system, agency, jurisdiction, etc. in order to create equal opportunities to live independently.

Independent Living Skills Provides consultation and training on an individual or workshop basis for individuals with disabilities to acquire practical daily living skills for home and community accessibility.

Personal Care Attendant Provides a referral list of potential personal care attendants. Specialist may assist persons to find the appropriate attendant. Provide advocacy for care attendant issues.

Peer Advising Provides consumers with peer advising resources that facilitate frank, honest discussions about dealing with ones disability and related issues, such as - Socialization - Emotional adjustment - Accessing resources - Family relations

Transitional Program Transition individuals with disabilities from the following facility types: Licensed skilled nursing facility (SNF) Intermediate care facility for developmentally disabled (ICF-DD) State hospital for the mentally ill Developmental center; or California Veterans Home A maximum of $ in total expenditures per consumer for start -up costs.

Computer Class Hands-on class and home instruction. Using Microsoft Windows and Office instructing basic word documents, opening accounts & internet skills.

Benefits Advising Assist individuals with advice on how to go back to work while obtaining SSA benefits. Ticket to Work/Disability Work Incentives SSI/SSDI, Medical and Medicare issues. WIPA - Work Incentives Planning & Assistance

Assistive Technology Provide Adaptive/Durable Medical Equipment to consumers whom can justify an increase in their independence. Ramps, grab bars, shower bench, one handed can opener, communication devices, software, computer repair, walkers, nebulizers, defibrillators, hand controls etc… Possible share of cost depending on income.
