Converting customary measures of length, weight, and capacity January 22, 2013

What is a customary measurement? The measurement system that includes units such as inch, foot, pounds, quarts; etc.

What is length? How long something is from one end to the other; a distance measurement; etc.

Length is the distance from one point to another.

Fencing for a garden; your height; etc. What are some instances where you might need a precise measurement for length or distance? Fencing for a garden; your height; etc.

How did you decide the estimated measure of each classroom item you chose?

What fractional parts is 1 inch divided into?

Let’s measure a crayon!

List two items that would be about the same length as each measurement given: 1 inch __________ 13 yards _____________ 4 inches ______________ 1 foot ________________ 0.5 inch _____________ 10 miles _________________

What customary unit would you use to measure the following? 7. baseball _______________ 8. driveway ________________ 9. distance from New York to Los Angeles _________________ 10. train ___________________ 11. telephone ______________ 12. refrigerator ___________

SOLVE: 13. Jenny has 3 bananas that are 6 inches long. If she lays them end-to-end, how long will the line of bananas be? 14. Brice needs 2 feet of ribbon to tie a bow around a birthday present. He has 3 feet. Does he have enough?

SOLVE: 15. What tool would you use to measure a football field? In what unit will your results be? 16. Kelly has 6 notebooks, each 1.5 inches thick. If she stacks the notebooks together, how tall would the stack be?

SOLVE: Clark says that his parents’ car is 96 units long. Which customary unit of length was each person using? Thomas says that a tree in his yard is a mile high. Is his clain reasonable? Explain.

SOLVE: 19. Rosa is 64 inches tall. Kathleen is 5 ft 4 inches tall. Who is taller? 20. The school is 27 yards away from the public library. Additionally, the school is 108 feet away from the train station. Which is the school closer to, the library or the train station?

SOLVE: Amani is standing 15 feet from the water fountain. Dimitri is standing 132 inches from the water fountain. Who is standing closest to the fountain? Morgan says that her brother is 2 yards tall. How many feet tall is he? How many inches?
