Slide Rob Huydts West-African cement industry and environmental performance Old installations with high environmental impact still operational Environmental performance improved significantly as a result of technical update due to rehabilitation and expansion Companies with a policy based on sustainability apply international standards. Is this autonomic development sufficient to realize environmentally responsible cement production all over West- Africa?

Slide 7 – Rob Huydts
Factors influencing environmental performance Internal: –Ambition level company and management environment at company level Policy Objectives, targets and standards Monitoring of performance at site level –Locally important: Involvement environmental performance in design/engineering phase Local management of environment External: –Environmental legislation and enforcement –Image company and actions stakeholders Combined internal – external –Cooperation with external institutes or partnerships Slide Rob Huydts
Slide Rob Huydts Specific problems West-African cement industry Ambition level companies –Different ambition level for environmental performance exists –Since voluntary, external factor necessary Environmental legislation and enforcement –Should create minimum performance level –Legislation under development: legal allowance determined by ambition level company –Enforcement at low level Level playing field –Not existing –Needed for environmentally responsible cement production all over West- Africa
Slide Rob Huydts HeidelbergCement approach in West-Africa Group environmental policy and ambitions are applied Measures and actions resulting from the Cement Sustainable Initiative (CSI) are implemented IFC guidelines are applied at the West-African sites Environmental performance is implemented in technical design/engineering process ISO certified environmental management system are established, maintained and implemented Group environmental audit scheme is executed
Slide Rob Huydts Status EMS HeidelbergCement activities in West-Africa Production locations in Ghana, Benin and Togo are ISO certified. Production locations in Gabon will be ISO certified before end 2013 and in Liberia and Sierra Leone in 2014 ISO management system will be implemented in Burkina Faso after commissioning of the site. 7 out of the 9 operational production sites have been audited in accordance to group environmental audit scheme
Slide Rob Huydts Conclusion and recommendations Significant increase environmental performance from autonomic development; additional actions needed for environmentally responsible cement production Level playing field necessary initiated by environmental legislation in combination with enforcement Environmental legislation should be developed and enforced (realistic targets and reasonable time schedules) in cooperation between authorities and cement companies/associations based on sustainability
