Does it create a physical or chemical change? Key Question: What is a mixture & how do you separate it? Warm-Up: What is a mixture?? Does it create a physical or chemical change?

Add this to your vocabulary section. mixture: two or more substances that are mixed together, but not chemically combined. In a mixture the individual substances keep their separate properties.

A salad is mixture. It is easy to see the pieces of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other ingredients and each of these parts could be separated by physical means.

* Mixtures can be separated into their original parts. BUN MEAT TOMATO LETTUCE

MIXTURES What are some mixtures you see everyday?

Is Kool-Aid drink a mixture????? So…… Is Kool-Aid drink a mixture????? Why or Why not?

(Add this to worksheet AND Special Mixtures: Solution – a special mixture where one or more of the substances dissolves in the mixture. Examples: Kool-Aid, salt water, sweet tea (Add this to worksheet AND vocabulary page) Add examples to sentence box in vocab. section.

We can classify mixtures based on: Solubility: ability to dissolve in a liquid Magnetism: the attraction to a magnet Boiling Point: the temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas

Solubility: A glass of water with salt dissolved in it would be a mixture. Salt has a high solubility in water because it dissolves easily & makes a solution. The salt may be dissolved but it is still there. This is why it is a mixture! You can boil off the water and still have salt left over. If you put sand into a glass of water, it is considered to be a mixture, too. Sand has a low solubility level in water because the sand does not dissolve nor make a solution.

Techniques to Separate Solutions Slotted spoons, sifters, magnets, etc. won’t work for separating solutions. SO…What tools or methods could be used to separate solutions? Filtration (using a filter) Evaporation/Boiling Paper Chromatography

Filtration: To separate solid particles from a liquid.

Evaporation: To separate salt from water. The water will evaporate (change from a liquid into a gas) leaving the salt crystals behind.

Property Separation Technique Soluble Dissolve the solid in water and then evaporate the water Magnetic Use a magnet to remove the metal Boiling Point Use distillation to separate two liquids with two different boiling points Particle Size Filter out solid particles from a liquid
