Geothermal energy is heat within the Earth. Definition of Geothermal Energy

How does Geothermal Energy Work? The temperature is 100 degree Celsius three miles beneath the earth. This is an exceptional temperature to boil water to generate a steam-powered electric power plant. However, drilling 3 miles below the earth, is nearly an impossible task. Instead, geothermal hotspots are found to derive geothermal energy. Geothermal hotspots could be used to generate electricity.

How can Geothermal Energy Be Used?  Geothermal Energy can be used to generate electricity. Geothermal power plants pump heated water or steam rock formations and use the water or steam rock formations and use the water or steam to power a turbine that generates electricity.

Some examples of Geothermal Energy's Use. Direct Use and District Heating Systems: Which use hot water from springs or reservoirs near the surface. Electricity Generation: Used in power plants which requires water or steam at high temperatures usually reaching about degrees Fahrenheit. Geothermal Heat Pumps: Use stable ground or water temperatures near the Earth’s surface to control building’s temperature above ground.

Environmental impact on Geothermal Energy  It usually depends on how it’s being used.  Direct use and Direct Heating Systems have almost no negative impact on the environment.  They do not burn fuel to generate electricity.

Environmental and Social Costs  Depletion of resources.  Damage to natural geothermal features.  Subsidence.  Polluting waterways.  Air emissions.

Is Geothermal Energy Widely Accepted Today?  Yes it is widely accepted today because it reduces greenhouse gases.

Do Costs of Geothermal Energy make it prohibitive for common use?  Its usually expensive and is one of the renewable energy sources that isn’t common.
