Peer Reviewer Training The SLN Quality Matters Initiative Continuous Improvement in Teaching and Learning

Overview Registration – Become a Peer Reviewer – Have your course reviewed Applying the QM Rubric Your Peer Review Team Using the Online Rubric Providing Constructive Feedback Concluding a Review Recognition

Registration Become a Peer Reviewer: Have your course reviewed: To have your course reviewed, you agree to participate in 3 course reviews as a Peer Reviewer.

Applying the QM Rubric (review of APQMR) When determining each standard, a “yes” implies 85% or better. When a standard is not met, constructive narrative feedback is required. You may also provide feedback for improving upon a standard that has been met. The expected time for your participation is 4-6 hours. The activity is asynchronous.

Your Peer Review Team The team is composed of 3 experienced faculty, each of whom must have taught online for at least 2 semesters. One member of the team will be a subject matter expert in the course discipline. One member will be external to the institution where the course is delivered. These two roles can be filled by one person. Course reviews remain open until each reviewer has finished with the rubric. After 2 weeks, SLN will recommend a timeline for an unfinished review.

Using the Online Rubric Once you have been assigned to review a course, you will be sent a link to the online QM Rubric for that review. The online rubric aggregates the input from all three reviewers – the yes/no “votes” as well as the narrative feedback. The “Save for Later” option enables reviewers to work at their own pace. It is not necessary to complete a review in one “sitting”.

Using the Online Rubric QMRubric.org 1. Access the online rubric. You will see a dashboard similar to the one below.

Using the Online Rubric QMRubric.org 2. Fill out (developer) or consult (reviewer) the Instructor Worksheet. This document will Provide contextual details for the Course Review Team.

Using the Online Rubric QMRubric.org 3. As you review the course content, choose “yes” if a standard is met, or “no” if not. If a standard is not met, provide constructive narrative feedback. Use the “Save for Later” feature until you have completed your review of all standards.

Using the Online Rubric QMRubric.org 4. As you return to the rubric for more work, you will notice a status report on the progress made by the other reviewers.

Using the Online Rubric QMRubric.org 5. The online rubric will aggregate the input of your colleagues and determine the pass/fail status for each standard once completed by each reviewer.

Providing Constructive Feedback Be sure to consult the Instructor Worksheet to be aware of any unique circumstances for the course under review. Keep your comments centered on the student experience (Students may have difficulty with …); Suggest strategies for improvement; Keep in mind that the Instructor (Course Developer) will have access to the rubric along with the Course Review team.

Concluding a Review 6. When finished, click the “Submit Review” button at the bottom of the rubric.

Recognition of Participation For Instructors having their courses reviewed: – Letter of recognition for participation in the SLN/QM process; – If course successfully passes review … SLN/QM stamp of quality. For faculty participating in the Peer Review Process: – Letter of recognition for participation in the SLN/QM process.
