Christmas in Greece Today almost everyone buys and decorates a Christmas tree in Greece. Usually they are decorated a few days before Christmas and remain in the homes until Epiphany. In older times, this custom did not exist in Crete and in some other parts of Greece they would decorate little boats instead. On Christmas, New Year’s Eve and the Eve of Epiphany, children sing the Greek Carols called Kalanda (the equivalent of carols) from house to house in their neighborhood, using as instrument the traditional triangle, and are offered treats, presents or coins. But most importantly, Christmas in Greece is celebrated with friends and family around the holiday table, wishing one another “Hronia Polla!” meaning “I wish you many happy years!” around home cooked meals. Traditional food includes the Christmas bread called “Christopsomo”, sweets such as “Melomakarona”, “Kourabiedes” or “Diples”.

Christmas in Russia The Russian Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January. It's a religious holiday and a lot of people go to church services on that day. There are some special Christmas traditions in Russia. One of them is kolyadky. Children and adults go from house to house, sing kolyadki and wish good luck to everyone, and people give them some presents. Most people like to wear costumes and masks. In the past people used to play games near the bonfire. They had a lot of fun. They also sang songs and danced in a circle in the snow. But now we haven’t got this tradition. But the most exciting tradition is fortune telling. Young girls like to tell fortune using candles, mirrors or coffee. Some people like to swim in ice holes in the rivers or lakes.
