Big Bang and Evolution of Employment Presented by Lance Kaldor

 Lance Kaldor  Adult educator – Workforce Consultant – Volunteer  Trade education to Masters in Adult & Organizational Learning & Leadership  Idaho Department of Labor  Employment Solutions and Resources for Job Seekers and Employers  So much more than just the unemployment office Welcome

 We are the evolution of the past  Who are the generations?  1901 – 1924 The greatest generation  1925 – 1942 The silent generation  1943 – early 60’s The Baby boomers  Early 60’s – early 80’s Generation X  Early 80’s - early 2000’s Generation Y or Millenniums  Early 2000 – now Generation Z  Generational Values and Norms that affect the world  What moved us forward Past

The Now

 Education  Experience  Soft Skills  #1 thing lacking according to employers hiring youth  #1 required thing for good business growth  Where are they in your cirriculum? What Employers Want

 Examples of soft skills include: - Showing up for work on time - Proper dress and grooming - A good attitude - Knowing how to work well with others - Showing initiative while on the job - Being able to follow directions - Learning from mistakes- - Being polite - Working well with a supervisor - Communicating well (both written and verbal) What are the Soft Skills

Idaho Career Information System

 Experience vs. Education  Who’s talking? Introduction of the Investing in America’s Future A Blueprint for Transforming Career and Technical Education from the Secretary of Education 2012  To educate our way to a better economy, educators, public officials, and policymakers must ensure that every student in our country graduates from high school prepared for college and a successful career. Yet that is not enough. If America is to once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by the end of the decade, every American should have access to at least one year of higher education or postsecondary training at an affordable cost. A world-class education system that provides high-quality job-training opportunities will reduce skills shortages, spur business growth, encourage new investment and hiring, spark innovation, and promote continued economic growth. The Future: Where are we Going?

 National vs. State –  Idaho we hear there is a need to have experience with education a shorter term education with experience Nationally only education and gov./non profits place less value the bachelors degree. However the suggestion here is that more advance degree is needed not less. (The Chronicle of Higher Education and American Public Media’s, December, 2012.)  One third of employers in this study place more value on today’s four – year degree vs. That of five years ago.  Idaho Campaign of “Go On” change to “1, 2, 4 or more” suggests that Idaho needs arer different.  We have to know how to differentiate the information between state and federal, but the message needs to be on the same page Future – Being part of the conversation

 The paper “The New American Workforce: Challenges and Opportunities for higher education (Jones, ND), suggests 7 challenges and opportunities to increase educational needs to meet employer needs  Developing specific strategies for reaching target populations – YOU  “ Demystifying access and participation in post secondary -Community  Designing and delivering integrated curriculum – (soft skills) YOU  Deployment of alternative delivery – YOU  Strategic Alliances – IDOL  Industrial recognized certifications  Professional Organizations and Certifying agencies  One Stop Access to the new economy – Connection between You and IDOL  Reputation – Community & Student Support Future: challenges and opportunities

Recent STEM conference put on by MICRON on Wed, 5/28 at the Riverside Hotel. Representative Raquel Longoria shared with me this information - Isn’t every job a STEM job in some fashion; Help students and support systems understand the importance of STEM; Interactive classrooms = soft skills. Career Cards What soft skills are needed? What type of Internship or Externship can assist with this career that may not necessarily be obvious? Thinking outside the box One classroom activity that can get the kids thinking in these lines? Who can tell me what a “Portfolio Careerist” is? Activity

 The data is happening “Success in the ew Economy” video  Become part of the conversation – and don’t let them push you out  Create, be real, and walk the talk!  Questions Closing
