ACCULTURATION “Process of cultural change that occurs in individuals when two cultures meet; it leads the individuals to adopt elements of another culture, such as values and social behaviors” (Sattler, 1998) “Process of cultural change that occurs in individuals when two cultures meet; it leads the individuals to adopt elements of another culture, such as values and social behaviors” (Sattler, 1998) Factors that affect the process of acculturation Factors that affect the process of acculturation History of migration experience—voluntary vs. involuntary immigrantsHistory of migration experience—voluntary vs. involuntary immigrants People forced to come against their will, people conquered People forced to come against their will, people conquered Distance from the culture and/or country of originDistance from the culture and/or country of origin For example, length of residence in the U.S., connections with country of origin For example, length of residence in the U.S., connections with country of origin

John Berry’s model of acculturation Two questions are key: Two questions are key: 1) Cultural maintenance—are cultural identity and characteristics considered important? Is the individual interested in maintaining culture of origin?1) Cultural maintenance—are cultural identity and characteristics considered important? Berry proposed four acculturation strategies (Berry, 1997) Assimilation Assimilation When individuals don’t wish to maintain their cultural identity and seek daily interaction with the majority/dominant cultureWhen individuals don’t wish to maintain their cultural identity and seek daily interaction with the majority/dominant culture Integration Integration A significant degree of cultural identity is maintained and full participation in dominant culture is sought and achievedA significant degree of cultural identity is maintained and full participation in dominant culture is sought and achieved Separation Separation When individuals place a value on maintaining their culture but avoid interaction with dominant/majority cultureWhen individuals place a value on maintaining their culture but avoid interaction with dominant/majority culture Marginalization Marginalization
