What’s The Matter? Day 1 Investigation Is shaving cream a solid, liquid, or gas?

Introduction Although the three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas, not all substances seem to fit perfectly into one of these groups. Take a look at shaving cream and see if you can decide whether it should be called a solid, liquid, gas, or something in between.

Materials Needed Shaving cream Small plate Penny Magnifying glass Paper towels

Let’s set up your journal… Date What’s the Matter? Day 1 Is shaving cream a solid, liquid, or a gas? Hypothesis: Pg # All drawings go here I NOTICE I WONDER

Procedure 1.Set up your science journal with a I Notice/I Wonder T Chart 2.Squirt some shaving cream onto your plate and observe it. 3. Examine it with a magnifying lens. 4.Form a hypothesis: Is shaving cream a solid, liquid or gas? 5.Draw what you see in your science journal 6.Try blowing gently on the shaving cream. 7.Try rubbing some between your fingers. 8.Do you still agree with your hypothesis? 9.Record your thoughts……

Let’s finish… Carefully place a penny on top of the shaving cream and observe what happens. Draw your observations. Now fill in your “I Notice/I Wonder” Chart. Leave the shaving cream overnight and observe again in the morning.
