Legalism and Faith (6) The Sabbath (Bible Study - June 1999) “With all this grist for their legalistic mill, the rabbis of old elevated Sabbath-keeping into the holiest of all laws. Of course, this level of piety required precise definitions galore, and they went at it with an enthusiasm that has not abated in thousands of years. A quotation from Adin Steinsaltz’s The Essential Talmud gives the flavor of the orthodox position on the Sabbath: “ In the most general sense, the numerous Sabbath laws are an expanding network of minute details deriving from several basic concepts, which eventually create an almost Gothic structure made up of thousands upon thousands of tiny and meticulously fashioned details clustered around an original form.”

Legalism and Faith (6) The Sabbath (Bible Study - June 1999) “To open a refrigerator door on the Sabbath, one must first disconnect the interior light (before the Sabbath) lest one violate the injunction against ‘kindling,’ as modern interpretations consider that using or turning on a light comes under the category of ‘kindling.’ Letting warm air into the refrigerator also creates a problem, because that will cause the compressor to activate before it otherwise would have. This would cause the compressor to ‘spark,’ also a Sabbath violation. Therefore, one has a timer installed to run the compressor motor at set intervals, rather than a thermostat, which the door’s opening would indirectly affect. Another proposed solution: open the door only when the compressor is already running.”

Christian Legalism “Root” Passages Deut 22:5“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God.” 1 Tim 2:9“…in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing…” 1 Pet 3:3“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel…” 1 Cor 11:14-15“Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.” Eph 5:18“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit…” 1 The 5:22“Abstain from every form of evil.” 1 John 2:15a“Do not love the world or the things in the world.”

Clothing and Appearance Deut 22:5“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God. Women shall not wear pants. 1 Tim 2:9“… in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing…” 1Pet 3:3“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel…”

Women shall not wear pants. 1 Tim 2:9“… in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing…” 1Pet 3:3“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel…” Women shall not style their hair, wear jewelry, or wear make-up.

Clothing and Appearance I Tim 2:1-4, 7-10Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior… I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 1Pet 3:3-6Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.

Clothing and Appearance Deut 22:5“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God. Women shall not wear pants. I Cor 11:14b-15a“… if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her…”

Drinking Eph 5:15-21See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation [excess]; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

General 1 The 5:22“Abstain from every form of evil.” 1 John 2:15a“Do not love the world or the things in the world.” Thou shalt not watch TV/movies; thou shalt not go to a theater. Thou shalt not play cards (or at least certain games). Thou shalt not visit an amusement park or carnival. Thou shalt not dance. Thou shalt not visit a casino. Thou shalt not smoke or use tobacco. Thou shalt not have a tattoo. There shall be no mixed [co-ed] bathing [swimming].

General 1 The 5:19-22Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. 1 John 2:15-17Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
